RE: Exterior and Underside paint colors

Butch: Alot of this depends on how much authenticity/originality you want to mimic in your

restoration. The underbody of these cars was sloppily painted in red oxide or gray primer ( Chrysler Corp used both) with someoverspray here and there from the exterior color. There were also areas that got no primer whatsoever.

Same with under the dash, under the package tray area, the area of the fenders not covered by the splash pans and so on. I'm re-doing my 64 Belvedere with gray primer underneath and then new undercoating

applied over that. There will be lots of exposed gray primer along the driveshaft-tranny tunnel, 4 speed hump,

and other typical areas not directly hit or oversprayed by undercoating. Now when you consider what we put in to these cars in time and money, its probably more pleasing to do what most guys do, and paint the whole darn thing, inside and out, in your ruby red. Definitely looks cool...but far, far away from how it was done back on that Monday morning in the winter of '63-64! 

So, its a matter of personal choice...do it the way you like it.

 

As far as paint goes, as an amateur I would stay away from two stage (base coat/clear coat) paints.

Your Ruby Red in urethane single stage (no clear) will be, again, far more beautiful than the original

lacquer, and its easier to do small repairs and touch up work in the home shop. If you have your pro do it

and you want extreme depth and deep shine, then go for the two stage. This is more EXPENSIVE, for sure,

but awesome on our vintage Mopars. It ain't good old nitrocellulose or acrylic lacquer, or our trusted acrylic enamel, that's for sure! Any basic system from R-M (Diamont), Sherwin Wms, or Dupont is fine...You do not need the Glasurit or other high dollar urethane systems. 

 

The real trick is the metal prep and primer...whole 'nother subject but very crucial to your success.
