I've used Mobil I 90 weight synthetic gear oil in a 1956 Ford three speed and it never shifted so good, especially in cold weather. .Quited it down too.

Agree, but that's what the manual specs were "back in the day" that you inquired about. Lubrication technology is much improved now in a lot of ways, though. You may want to try something like Synchromax <http://www.royalpurple.com/manual-transmission-fluid.html> and see what happens. Or call their tech line and ask what fluid they suggest you use. 888-382-6300 Thanks, Gary H. -----Original Message-----From: Mike and LindaIsn't that an awfully big jump in viscosity? There isnt' what I'd call gear rattle, just some light whining thanks----- Original Message ---------Dexron ATF in 3 & 4 speed manuals. If there was excessive gear rattle -- in a car located in a warm climate -- the Dexron could be replaced with SAE 90multipurpose gear lube in the 3 speed, and SAE140 in the 4 speed trans. Thanks, Gary H. -----Original Message-----In my 65 Belvedere 3spd manual tranny is ATF. I check the level, its fine. The PO put it in. The car had a new clutch put in...and there has been very very very littlemiles on it (200 in 15 yrs.). the throwout bearing is a little rumbly, butnot bad. The tranny is a little whinny, not bad though. I just wondering if putting heavier oil in will quiet it down. What's required per the manual? 30wt. motor oil?---- Please address private mail -- mail of interest to only one person -- directly to that person.
