Bill: I had the same problem with my 65 Coronet heater box. The guy I used is Jim Tucker, 760-749-3488, CA. www.heatercontrolvalve.comI sent the unit to him and he reconditioned the valve. I thought very reasonable and he sent me additional "O" rings.
He worked with me over the phone as I was reassembling it. Also if you take it out of the car label all the hoses.I decided to test it before putting it under the dash. Kind of crazy but I set it on top the Air Cleaner and hooked up the hoses and fired it up. I let it warm up and found no leaks. I then started turning the RPM up to about 4,000. I was alone but best to have someone with you.
For testing the valves I used my vacuum tester. All went well, but the key is the "O" ring. Hope this info helps. I pulled the box when I did the carpet so I could come up with an alternate or additional sealing solution...it's the type that the valve slips into the heater core, and the valve IS the inlet to the heater core (also read $$$) as opposed to being inline somewhere else. I was going to create a flat rubber gasket that would go between the heater control valve flange and the bung in the heater core as an extra seal, but it doesn't look that will work after looking at it out of the car. I'll try a square o-ring, but I'd like to do something else too.
