Paul, I am probably sounding like a cracked record, but have you checked that you have a radiator to hood seal and any other air dams in place that would direct air through the radiator instead of going around it? Any air gap on the sides between the core and the radiator support? ...........................MO

I've had issues keeping my car cool in stop and go traffic. I changed the water pump last winter to a higher flow model. Tonight was the first chance I've had to get it out and drive it any distance with some stop and go in the middle. It ran nice and cool on the highway but then got into a little stop and go and the temp started to climb. It only got up to @ 2/3rds the way up the gauge but I could hear some percolating. Then got it back out on the open road and within @ 5 miles the temp was back to normal. So that indicates to me that I have an airflow problem. Looks like I'll be shopping for a flex fan. Paul L.
