I've wondered for some time if this is really a valid concern. Most of us here have gotten the Amp meter out of the picture just due to the fire hazard they present...beyond that with a fusible link and decent battery cable...where is the real potential for a problem? This is a vehicle with four or five fuses, maybe I'm tempting fate but I've ran over 90amp alternators on several early '60's cars with stock wiring without incident. Only time I ever got into trouble was once when I straight wired an electric fan on a '63 Belvedere. Stupid Move I know but a lesson well learned. As to inability to cope with a bunch of extra output though... I feel like sometimes we may just be a tad overly cautious in what we think the old circuits can stand. Just my observations....

I agree, as said you may want to check the voltage regulator. I have
bought several of the electronic units from O'Reilly. Depending on
their stock in the store I have bought the same unit under the same part
number in three different styles.
Chrome metal case
Black metal case (the best for our cars)
Square plastic case
You can tell if it is the electronic unit by looking at the bottom, if
it has the external resistors like our old units it is NOT the
electronic unit. Unless you have a better parts house than I have don't
bother to ask at the desk if it is the electronic unit.
As said the bulkhead connector can be the problem if one of the
connection is not making well and has a high resistance. Not real easy
to check but unplugging and replugging may help, it will clean the
connectors. A much better thing to do is bypass it by running a wire
from the alternator to the large lug on the starter relay with a fusable
link in it. You should have no problems finding details in this by
doing a search. This will disable your ampmeter in the dash.
If the problem is in the headlight circuit installing relays under the
hood for the headlights is a very good idea. (I haven't done it yet but
will soon). This takes the load off of the connectors in the bulkhead
connector and increases the brightness of your headlights.
I personally lean towards the voltage regulator.
