I have often been told it cost the same to rebuild a 440 as a 383, so might as well build the bigger engine. But these days I like the idea of staying with the original engine (maybe because I already have one 440 powered car anyway). My son had a '69 magnum 383 rebuilt that he installed in his '64 Dodge 330 station wagon. Local maching shop rebuilt it for about $1500. It has a mild performance cam with performance manifold and carb. All parts no problem to find at reasonable cost, and no special mopar specific knowledge for rebuilding required as long as you have the specs. There are usually 2 to 3 rebuildable 383 engines on craigslist every time I am looking for parts, tend to average $350.
