Re: Men of Mopar!: A rebuilt 440 ci Engine, Distributor installation question.

Don,
On modified engines the centrifugal advance must often be decreased to allow more initial advance which will increase bottom end torque and allow the engine to idle at a reasonable speed. The rate of advance can also be changed with lighter tension springs. Many stock advance curves don't reach full advance until 4000 or more RPM. I'm sure this info is available on line in much greater depth.

Hey, that's a good idea. First time I heard that.

I'm having some initial advance issues which are making it hard to start.  I can use that to see where the initial timing is located.  Seem like there is not enough initial advance even though its set to 37 degrees at full advance.

Jay,
I forgot to mention my initial timing routine. Set the damper at the advance you desire-with the ignition key in run position and the coil wire close to a ground-rotate the distributor opposite normal rotation and note the spark timing. turn it back and forth rapidly and you can judge where it should be set. This will get you very close.

Were should the rotor in the stock distributor be pointing to, in order to get the best possible start.
