Re: Re: 64 Polara fender repair question

I want to thank all of you guys how came to my rescue. I gathered all your thoughts and ideas and went and sanded off the undercoating so I could see where and how the inner brace is held on to skin. Spot welds etc. I have plan A and B in case chaos happens! I'm going to use Polara fenders with the good brace which needs one brace wing repaired and order a patch panel. That will give a fender with perfect wheel wells, flairs/lip and arch. Plan B is if A fails, I'll split the inner brace on the 440 fenders (which aren't as nice as the Polara's) and see if it can be moved to reset skin. I'm being very picky I know. Soon I'll have new computer with enough free memory to get into Picasa and post start to now progress photo's. Thanks again, Ruth

Ruth,
If you are talking about the inner brace that actually bolts to the rocker panel I have cut the spot welds and removed the brace without much trouble on my 1965 Belvedere. I needed to patch rust holes in both the fender and reinforcement. You might be able to straighten the fender with the brace removed and replace it with the one from your good fender.

Thanks to all for responding. I'm working with Picasa to get set up to send pics... My issue is that the inside fender vertical brace
has been hit apparently from the bottom as if whoever ran over something and pushed the bottom by where the fender bolts on upward. This is causing misalignment also on fender where trim holes are where fender meets the door. It looks funky regarding trim pieces meeting and being straight visually. The brace is so rigid we can't get it to move plus the fender skin has been tweaked and beat on at the bottom where it bolts. I do have a polara fender to use or section that is not tweaked at the brace but it has other repairs needed in front of the wheel well.... I'm thinking about horizontally cutting the polara fender behind the wheel well and sectioning it onto the one on the car now. Don't know if that is reasonable thing to do and scary to start cutting up both fenders I have to work with if chaos happens! Thanks, Ruth

I have done the repair to the bottom of the front fenders on my 64 440
and my wife's 64 Polara 500 ragtop and it is not hard but does require
some adjusting of the piece.  Blends well with the original and only
the place where the bolt goes through the fender into the splash
shield needed real tweeking.
