Re: Poly 4bbl Intake

Polyheads,

The HEMI to Poly engine modification is no mystery and I have known about it for over 40yrs. (see the 1956 Fury Daytona Beach Race articles...) but have not invested any time creating the package/mods necessary to bolt the HEMI intake onto a 318 Poly.  At that time Weiand still produced the #7503 and plenty of OEM and aftermarket Poly intakes were affordably available at swap meets and online.  This has all changed in the last couple years and truly requires the entrance of a viable and affordable alternative – the modification option w/separate valley pan and water neck outlet mod or a totally new Poly intake casting complete and ready to bolt-on.  My personal projects have deferred my time for this endeavor but as of late several more enthusiastic and mechanically inclined friends have urged the previously “backburner” intake project to the present.

This is a concerted effort that owes its impetus to Roland Osbourne of Chrysler Power Magazine to whom the merits of Poly-power amazed him and thus the enthusiasm grows to a roar with his many industry contacts.  Gary Stauffer of QEC Engineering (HEMI fame) is extremely talented in the technical realm and brings much to the idea table in this project as well.  I have the most experience regarding the Poly engine and simply revealed what Chrysler engineers did in 1956 to propel the 303 cid Poly in a 1956 Fury to over 143mph one way on the beach that year.  Couple the simple mod of adding a cast iron dual quad HEMI intake to the Poly 318 engine and you can see what is possible now by looking back to what yesterday’s engineers have done.  The HEMI intake is near dead on center with the port spacing compared to a Poly engine so this is a very easy casting modification in my mind and the other “differences” are minor – to my thinking – and should be a piece of cake for an experienced foundry to take the Hot Heads HEMI intake and pattern a new 4bbl. Air Gap style Poly intake.  Our foundry meeting on Monday, Oct. 14th will determine (hopefully) the affordability of casting a true bolt-on Poly intake or necessitate the need for a “kit” to adapt the HEMI manifold; I am lobbying/urging the creation of a true bolt on manifold – cost will determine this as we want this to be affordable and easy for Poly engine owners.  I am more than hopeful this will transpire; either way, there will be a Poly intake available that will be superior in every way over the current single carb options.  Yes, if a single four can be successfully cast, multi-carb manifolds (and more) will follow.

I hope I have explained our current project status and answered questions posed and other questions yet unasked.

Respectfully,
Gary Pavlovich

Gary has been working on this for a couple  of years now I thought he would have clued us in to new product and the necessary hardware to install it. So we will have to bounce this off him and see what he says!  If he says buy I will be also!

Ok thanks. I was filling out the web page to buy one then noticed the picture before hitting the send button. I have two fours on it now. I don't want to buy something that will require a lot of other parts to make it work.

Their picture does not look like a poly intake.

Chrysler Power is selling new 4bbl Poly intakes.  No affiliation, etc... - I just thought I'd share it for those who hadn't heard.  Looks pretty good.
