Re: Starter problems

Thanks for the answers. I finally made some progress.

On the starter relay, for testing, I was shorting the two light gauge 'tab' connectors, then turning the key all the way to crank it. That's when it would go 'click click click' and then nothing.

Today I tried turning the key one 'notch' just to engage the electric, then I shorted the two 'nut' connectors on the start relay. Yay!! The starter cranked good and the engine started and ran.

So I guess the problem exists between the starter relay and the ignition switch. I just replaced the ignition switch maybe 1 year ago. I'll check for loose connections and crappy wires. Or a faulty switch, but it's pretty new. Any advice on diagnosing?

Anyway, getting closer. Certainly more is right than wrong.

Terminals are clean as can be and just about brand new. The starter relay is brand new, but I'll try jumping it again. The key switch is almost new.

How would the ballast resistor affect the starter? I didn't think they hand anything to do with each other. The starter isn't turning.

I'm having starter problems. The starter won't turn. Sometimes I get a 'click', sometime nothing at all. Dash lights all light and do what you'd expect.

- I had the battery checked at Pep Boys; they said it's good. What should the voltage across the terminals be?

- I added a 'jump box' to the battery; no difference. Also tried jumping with another car.

- Figured it had to be the starter itself. I replaced it over the weekend and no difference.

Now I'm at a loss. Any thoughts or advice?
