I'm trying to set the timing on my '61 Imperial and I'm having trouble finding the marks on the crank pulley. All of the illustrations I can find have a line, but mine has a circle. Should I be using this to set it? Is this maybe another Imperial only anomaly?

Get under the car and you might have to use sandpaper to find the line. Mine was so light it was hard to find, but I found it.
Seems like Chrysler didnt put heavy lines on the harmonic balancer.

I looked thoroughly again, but only see this circle drilled as the only marking.

That is a balance hole. Pull # 1 plug, have some one turn the engine over with a socket on the crank till you feel compression on #1plug hole , then start looking closely at the damper as it comes up to tdc on the tab, there must be a mark there.

I had the same problem on my 1960 Chrysler New Yorker. I had to locate TDC and cut my own mark. When I located TDC there was absolutly no mark what so ever.

If you find the need to make your own timingmark, you should also mark the inner and outer balancer rings, so you can check back a year later orso if the outer ring might move during operation. Meaning the balancer rubber seperating the parts has worn.

That could be the problem I'm having with my 57 392. I just added the pertronix electronic ignition and attempted to set the timing, found and painted the TDC line (actually says TDC) on the balancer, but when checked with a timing light the TDC mark is at the bottom of the engine when #1 fires. I set the timing by ear and the car runs great, but I want to know where the timing is set. I'll locate TDC of #1 and scratch my own marks as you recommend and then monitor for differential movement in the balancer.

By the way, the manual says 6 degrees BTDC advance for timing. Is that with or without the vacuum advance connected? I usually like to start at the recommended advance, and then gradually advance it about 2 degrees at a time, then "power brake" the car & listen for pinging from too much advance after each adjustment, then when it does ping, I back off the advance one degree at a time until the ping is gone. I believe this method nets the most power. Anybody have any tips or comments on setting timing? Steve

I am interested in your timing mark being "down the bottom"

It might be balancer slip, but I was thinking, what if you put the cam in 180 deg out?

Wouldnt that mean that you would then have to put the dizzy in 180 out as well?

Then your timing mark would end up on the bottom?

Not really sure what (if any) implications that would make to the running of the engine, but just a thought.
