Expert 5K+ Posts: 9904 Location: Lower Mainland BC | Not sure about 55 hemis but I installed a Pertronix 1383 also known as CH 392 in my D500 dual point IBK-4301A distributor. Yours might be different. Maybe a 1385LS??? http://shop.pertronix.com/media/wysiwyg/PerTronix2019.pdf It was easy. Just don't break your flexible ground wire just to make it challenging.

Veteran Posts: 189 Location: Northern Illinois | thanks for the advice. didn't know about the la distributor. is it a direct bolt on or does modification need to be done? will probably use the original distributor with pertronix upgrade. this is good to know for future projects!!

Veteran Posts: 189 Location: Northern Illinois | Nathan, that's a neat item you sell, if I had a spare la distributor laying around I would go that route. I read your website it said the oil pump gear had to be changed? is there a height change or is the slot different? just wondering.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9670 Location: So. Cal | The intermediate shaft is changed on the '55 301 Chrysler, 331, 354, 392, 315, 325 motors. These motors have longer distributor shaft lengths so you change the intermediate shaft to make it work with the new distributor. But the 241, 270, 277, 301 Plymouth, 303, 318, 326 motors will accept the new distributor without any changes. I am not as familiar with the DeSoto hemi motors but I would assume the raised block versions had longer distributors and the smaller 276, 291 motors used the same length as the electronic distributors. But I haven't verified it on the DeSotos yet, so I am just guessing.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9670 Location: So. Cal | Thanks Wayfarer. It looks like DeSoto all use the same length shaft, according to Hot Heads. So then, these motors all use the same size shaft & distributor: Chrysler 301-354; Dodge 315, 325; DeSoto all hemi's and these motors use the same as the newer LA small block: Dodge 241, 270; Plymouth 'A' poly: all And the Chrysler 392 hemi stands alone as the longest.

From the bottom of the upper mounting plate to the end of the shaft I measure ~4.25" Edited by 56D500boy 2019-08-21 6:08 PM (IBK-4301A_small_Annotated.jpg) Attachments ---------------- IBK-4301A_small_Annotated.jpg (190KB - 159 downloads)

And, MaMopar being who se is/was made some minor variations in shaft lengths but not usually an issue.
