Member Posts: 43 | Picked up a new process A745 3 speed transmission. I was told it was behind a 361 in a 1962 chrysler. This is a top loading transmission similar to the 6cyl 3 speeds. However this one has a hump in the cover. I want to put it behind a mildly built 413. Can anyone confirm this information or its durability behind a big block? From what I have found this was used in trucks not cars. Also are the heavy duty tranmissions used in '59 the same for '60?

Expert Posts: 1740 Location: Alaska | the A745 has pin type synchros and that is the weak link in them. Under high power hard shifting they can bend and then it won't shift. The BW T-85 was the HD trans. used in 60, not sure if it was also used in 59.

Member Posts: 43 | The T-85 transmissions are a side load, correct? What kind of identification numbers can I look for to make sure I get the right one? Does the light duty v 8 trans look the same or are there obvious things to distinguish them. Also do you know how many splines the shaft going into the clutch should have? Thank for your help.

Expert Posts: 3780 Location: NorCal | The T-85 trans will have a raised casting number T-85 followed by a letter on the drivers side, for example T-85C...ditto for the side cover and the tailhousing. Member Posts: 43 | Hey, 56fan..... Thanks for the idea. I had debated even going to a 5 or 6 speed. But I decided to try and go as close to stock as possible. 57Chizler, thanks for the pictures. Do you happen to know what year transmission you have pictured. I want to be able to have the parking break mounts so I don't have to upgrade the brakes. Will this be true for 1960 transmissions as well? The casting numbers that is.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8948 Location: WHEELING,WV.>>>HOME OF WWVA | History of the A833 Chrysler Four Speed Transmission Chrysler's first factory-installed four-speed transmission (1963) was the Borg Warner T-10. It didn't take long for the engineers at Chrysler to conclude a stronger and more durable transmission was needed, and the New Process A-833 was introduced with the 1964 model year. Both '64 and '65 models carried the flanged output for the ball-and-trunnion style universal joint. B- and C-bodies utilized the common 2.66 low gear ratio, while the A-body transmissions were 3.09 low gear ratio. The 1965 Super Stock 426 Hemi-powered vehicles received the first heavy duty "Hemi" 18-spline input models.

Member Posts: 43 | Yes the A833 came out in 64. Three other four speeds were commonly used but are all weak top loading transmissions. The A833 does have the flange as shown above on the T 85 however there is no mounting bosses to mount the parking brake assembly on the tailshaft. I am also trying to stick with the column shift. If I go to a four speed or more gears a floorshift is in order. does anyone know what the light duty v8 transmission was in 1960. That way I can compare the two if I find one Thank you

Expert Posts: 1740 Location: Alaska | The Borg Warner T-85 as used in the 60 FL s had a rear mounted parking brake just like the standard 3 speeds and IIRC it used a clutch with 1 1/8" 10 splines. Even though it was considered a heavy duty trans., it was the basis for the BW T-10 4 speed and is not as strong as the Mopar A833. I know because I broke several T-85s racing.

Member Posts: 43 | Excellent, that is what I needed. I will bed going back to a guy that has a few 3 speeds laying around, in a couple weeks. Hopefully the one I looked at before is still available. Although the car, when finished, will makes a 1/4 mile run or two, It won't bed a race car. More of a sunday cruiser. So hopefully with a overhaul it will hold up to the big block power ok.

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | Josh, the application of the3-speed trannies is not well documented, and/or the internal gearing inside them. The 1958+ trannies (according to the 1958 Hot Rod Fury road test, and other articles on cars having them installed) state that strength and ratio improvements were continuously made to them. A mid-late 60's truck 3-speed ought to be fairly strong...or, as strong as they got. For your trannie part numbers, a 50's guy will start with a '1' and the second number will be that part's year of introduction, like 7, 8,9, etc. 1960 production begins with a '2' and the next number is the part's year-introduction. So, if you find a 3-speed with a P/N of 2 1-7, you've found a fairly refined transmission. I'd like to see what the various trannies look like, as well as their P/N's. (Also, I dunno what P/N trannie was put into the 300F/G/H or the early super stock/D500's). Here's the not-bad-at-all 1961 Dodge Super Stock trannie's performance....don't worry about the '61 Knuckle-buster; that's a 60-ish dash problem. But, if I ever score a super Dodge, I'll have the shift-linkage be shortened and strengthened! Member Posts: 43 | D500.... Not sure about later years but the 1960 300f had the pont-a-mousson (french built for facel vega) 4 speed. Which if I could find one or had the money as that is actually what I want but..... The heavy three speed will suffice.

Regular Posts: 59 Location: N.W. FL | If you want a 3 speed you might want to look for the Chrysler A230. This was Mopar's later HD 3 speed and it came in everything from /6 to big block. I believe came out in '68 or '69. The 340 and big block models were close ratio and /6 & 318 were wide ratio. Not sure about trucks, they would all probably be wide ratio. Came in both long and short tailshaft versions. All were fully synchronized.

I wonder if these would be compatible with the crazy shifter and shifter-linkage in the earlier cars?

Expert Posts: 1740 Location: Alaska | Hate to disagree with you Smitty but I personally owned a 6o Plymouth Belvedere with a 361 4 bbl and a 3 speed Borg Warner T-85 That was factory stock. I broke that trans. a couple times racing and had to find another in the local salvage yards and they could be found in 60 Dodges and Plymouths with the big block engines.
