Regular Posts: 57 Location: GREENEVILLE, TN | Can anyone tell me what pump I have? The car has been sitting for around 10 years without being run. Power steering reservoir is just about empty and the bottom of the pump is wet with fluid. Does anyone rebuild these? Member Posts: 43 Location: Luleå, Sweden | When a pump like this getting bad pressure on idle when the engine is hot. No leakage. What is it that is worn? the rebuild kits seem only to have gaskets. My steering fluid was very bad and I am changeing it now. But could it bee anything more in the pump that is bad?

I was able to chase it in the 55-58 Mopar Parts Catalogue pdf and then find the 1672 697 Eaton pump that is on my 56 Dodge (driven by the back-side of the generator). Hope I don't derail the thread. (I've posted diagrams for both my 1672 697 Eaton pump and the 1826 158 Vickers so not to mess up the thread too much). No difference with new fluid. Still bad pressure in idle when turning the wheel and hot engine. Could it be better if I buy a kit for the pump and change everything included?

Elite Veteran Posts: 696 Location: Finland | Are you sure the pump is the issue? I would check the pressure by just loosening the return hose or the valve bolts. It should of course leak heavily at once. If it does leak out you have to put in a o-ring and piston ring kit in the gear unit. These kits you can probably get from any us car parts dealer in Sweden or from ebay.

Member Posts: 43 Location: Luleå, Sweden | Hi Ralf. Missed that post and have had the car unused a couple of years, but now when on the street the problem is present again. I am not sure how I should perform that test. Ok, if I loosen the return hose It should be a big flow of oil. If not it should be something wrong, but what? The other place you suggest me to check is the valve bolts. Is it the plug above named 19-54-125 that you mean? If so, would not every part of the valve just flow out of it? Is it this piston and ring 19-54-31 you are referring to? But you calls it the gear unit, is the steering gear or is it also a name for a part at the pump? (I have the 1826 158 pump unit) Edited by Icy '58 2024-05-31 6:57 AM
