I remember seeing the Plymouth Belmont in person with my father at one of the big car shows in Detroit. I thought it was a beautiful car then but now is a different story. I like the DeSoto Adventurer I and Adventurer II much, much better these days. Sure would like to have one. I believe there was a concept Dodge Dart about the same time and I thought that was kinda sharp too. But DeSoto rules!

usually don't like dream cars but like the belmont. its visible in the background of the movie "hollywood or bust" which is a great film, that features a 56 chrysler convertible in a leading role.

The 1954 Plymouth Belmont was one of two show cars during the Exner era that were not designed under the direction of Exner. The other was the Dodge Granada. I know most writers say the Belmont was an Exner creation, but I just cannot see the Belmont being done by Exner. Its styling just does not have the advanced themes the other cars he was responsible for. (To be blunt, the Belmont is ugly, although the Granada is worse.) The Belmont's headlights look like 1960 Polara taillights while the Belmont's taillights were modified 1953 Chrysler units. Take the grille off the Belmont and shrink the headlights and you have the back end of the 1952-54 Ford.

The Belmont's fibreglass body was supposedly done by Briggs, but Briggs ceased to exist in December, 1953, when Chrysler bought the firm. The engine was a Dodge 241-cid hemi putting out 150 bhp and mated to Plymouth's Hy-Drive transmission. Talk about the future meeting the past. Hy-Drive was an update of the 1940 version of Fluid Drive - a torque converter (in place of a fluid coupling) mated to a 3-speed transmission. Contrary to what some claim, Hy-Drive was not a semi-automatic. The driver had to do all the shifting.

The Belmont was on display in the fall of 1954 with the introduction of the new 1955 models.

Gasperetti's was a fancy Italian joint down on 4th (?) Avenue, near Pioneer Square
and Union Station. My old man would take us down there on occasion when cars like
57 Imperials might be seen parked out front. I remember it smelled SO GOOD inside
and the spaghetti and garlic bread were wonderful.

At some time in the past three years or so I posted a photo (black and white) of a '58 Dodge (? maybe Plymouth) in the middle of a bunch of cars racing at Lakeside in Australia...

I'd like to find that pic if anyone can tell me how to find my own pics.

Soon one million (1000000) view hits on this great thread. Does it even fit 7-digit number to that place?

This "zfb377 Phoenix AZ.jpg" is my 377th zfb.. starting pic and final one of the series, which I post.
I decided to close my FB profile few weeks ago and had collected all those pics from FB.

I can count 4 options on this buggy: Full wheel covers, driver side outside mirror, radio, tu-tone paint. Probably has a heater but that might just be it. Dad was a DeSoto-Plymouth dealer in 1957 in a Michigan rural community and it was very common for him to sell "bare bones" cars similar to this one. In fact 2dr hardtops were rare - most were Plaza or Savoy 4dr sedans snd some wagons - lots with manual 3 on the tree transmissions, no power options, 6-cylinders, AM radio, heater, and undercoating was somewhat popular because it was believed that it repelled the Michigan winter salt; that's it.

I can hardly imagine anything like this today.

Golly! That white '58 Windsor above had to be restored - it couldn't have the side moldings that straight and in line from the factory - could it? Amazing! Had to be a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday built car.

I'm surprised that no one commented on the early Corvette in the foreground of the 1957 De Soto picture. There couldn't have been that many sold in Pennsylvania. Until GM put a V-8 in it, people stayed away from the dealer in droves. I wonder how well the 1953-54 Corvette handled snow?
