Wow! I haven't seen a piece of diagnostic equipment like that in years! When I trained at FVTI (a technical college) for automotive mechanics they had a nearly new Sun diagnostic machine that resembled this type. It was more up to date though than the one in the picture as I remember it had an oscillisope for testing the ignition circuit and an exhaust pipe sniffer probe for checking the exhaust emissions. (This was ca. 1975-6)  The stuff they have these days in the dealerships though makes the Sun machine look like something from another century (literally).

I wonder if the folder the gentleman is holding is his limited warranty from Chrysler Corporation?

This is the coolest thread ever. Just about ever shot is my childhood encapsulated. I walked those sidewalks and marveled at the signs, trolley wires, the chrome, .... everything !

I find it amusing how bare and open those parking lots are. All the uproar in recent years has put into law all the greenstrip rules of landscaping and made those asphalt fields as passe as finned cars. I kinda like 'em !

I am in need of a major fin fix these days. I check here nightly to see if there is new stuff posted. BTW - several shots have been forwarded to my architect for design ideas on the new shop. No pole barn going to be built here !

OK, .. so we have established that there was a Morris in Pittsburgh and another one 3000 miles away in Umatilla, Oregon. There *might* have been a 3rd one somewhere else ???

Great pix. I love this stuff. I expect to see a 5 year old ME standing in any one of them !

You were right Brent, there was a 3rd one...

It says "Pagosa Springs", but I don't see a 1948 Peterbuilt hanging out of the side of a feed store.

I was wondering that, too, Paul. Especially since I own a pink and white '59 Plymouth wagon with a trailer hitch like the one in this photo. And mine has Oregon plates that expired in 1969.

NJ/NY Diners seem to attract FL owners

Funny thing is that the reo diner is about 1 mile from my house and is still standing. They have a car show literally around the corner on Main St. in woodbridge.

As for the bridgewater diner, it stands too, remodeled though, and there's a show across the highway at the now fudruckers, at the time a forrest.

HEY SID! You noticed the 'skirts' on the 55 PLY convertible, in the "Longhorn Ranch/N.M." postcard, up-above here?

There's a '58 PLY in the photo, so the 55 has been wearing those skirts probably-almost from when it was new!

yes, saw it. i once had a huge collection of old chrome postcards with lots of forwardlook cars with skirts, mostly 55/56 plymouths, and a couple of 57-60.
this is my favorite in this thread. i like light colored bodys with dark top and side spear+ skirts. you can't make a 57/58 plymouth look longer, sleeker and lower. i love this car!

While Sid and I will never agree on fender skirts, I am right here on the "sleek".

Is it just me, or does anyone else here find it hard to believe GM and Ford could even GIVE their cars away in those years ? Look at the 59 Ford or the 58 Caddy in that shot ! What "unsleek" cars they were ! I guess this is proof that MY interest in sleek 50's cars was not entirely shared by the buying public !

I have been watching some Perry Mason episodes from early 1958 where they use a 58 Bonneville ragtop and in the last one, a 58 Pontiac Tri-Powered Star Chief. Both would be considered top shelf 50's GM cars then and now, but man ! ..... what fat, dumpy cars when put up against any comparable Plymouth. Exner really was on a different planet. Thank God !

These post cards are just so kool!!!!
I love looking at them.
A shoot in the dark and maybe i have asked this before but is there anybody that has a postcard from Jamestown,ND from the late
fifties and up to around 1963?
Thats when my 57 was in that town.
Molli Anderson used a regular parking spot, and it had to be parked near the presbytarian church, under the stained glass window.
Maybe someone caught it on film......

Couple things: In the San Pedro (pronounced "San Peedro") CA postcard, up above here a couple-cards, and, also
way-up, on Mark's last BIG-mega-posting, on the card, entitled : "Davenport Chiropractic" , look at how TIGHTLY
the cars parallel parked to each other!

Think that the cars' bumpers were not put to good very-effective usage, back in the day?

Other thing: on that same mega-posting, on the Dublin GA postcard, which was taken around 1958, note that Regular
gas cost $0.32/gallon; Primo was $0.35/gallon.

Think that was cheap?

NOoooooo; that translates to at least $3.50, and probably close to $4.00/gallon now.

And those people paid that price on a daily 10-mile/gallon usage rate, all-day/every day, and bought new or replacement
cars about once every five years (or less). And, there was about 1 car/family, back then; certainly not more than two, per average household.

The reason that they could pay so much for gas (and their real take-home pay was very similar to what we make, today)
was that their lives were SIMPLE, and cheap---in the sense that they paid NOTHING for their TV service (if they had it, in
some of those small towns) and they had ONE telephone in their entire household, and maybe that was arranged on a 'party-line'
basis, and they bought "designer-NOTHING" stuff-and-apparel. a luxury was a power lawn mower, or eating-out (dinner!)
once in a while.

When they went on vacation, they went CAMPING, and they never heard of LL Bean, or Camping World, or Caballas, or
Lands-End, or Bass Pro Shops or Bannana Republic, or Orvis.....or Big 5 Sporting Goods.

Hardly-nothing was a "must-have" item, back then, but a decent-paying regular job, a nice (1300 sq.ft) house, and a NEW(ish)
car !----and a wifey and good looking children, which the lone-working-father fully supported and who paid for their higher-
learning, himself.

"Credit cards" were a luxury, which were paid off, each month. Cars were mostly paid for in cash-money.

An airplane trip was a special luxury, too.

Money was SAVED, back then.

Being "in debt" was being on the road to the "poor house"(wherever THAT was!)

So, with our 25++mpg-mobiles, now-a-days, which hardly require any service, over 15+ year service lives, we bitch about
$3.50++/gallon gas, BECAUSE we spend so much of the rest our take-home pay on trifles and "emotionally-necessary"
custom-designer-related crap, that really has nothing to do with the necessities of living.

The list of what we-all WASTE our money on, today, in relation to the extent of our being in DEBT, is endless.

You pay off your credit card balance, every month, and save money for whatever-good-reason: you're the EXCEPTION, in
today's familial fiscal realities.

Just noticed, on that Davenport Chiropractic postcard, that , in addition to the two 60 Dodges parked next to each
other, the farther-back parked '55 Fart is actually wearing "cruiser skirts" on it.

I am quite familiar with the Davenport Chiropractic postcard. That picture was taken about 1960-61, in my hometown of Davenport, Iowa. It's the chiropractic school (http://www.palmer.edu), which also housed a local radio station at that time. All those cars are parked very close to each other, and that street is on the top of a hill overlooking the downtown area. Unfortunately, neither of my parent's cars (1956 Belvy, 1961 Dart Seneca) are in this shot.

This is nothing short of incredible, I just spent
hours looking and reading this thread. Thinking
about how great the 50’s must have been to
grow up in. Then at the end d500neil put it
all in perspective. He didn’t mention that in
the schools the children were taught to duck and cover
under their desks in case of a nuclear
attack which everyone thought was eminent.

Now I have to get to work, it’s going to be
a late day…..Thankyou for posting these
pictures.

Yeahbutt: Duck-and-Cover was something else that was FREE of charge, back then.

NOW: we have to PAY (to the Govenment) in order to be scared....of "terrorist attacks" ...Homeland Security,
it's called.

I'll have to agreed with Neil. Yes, daily expenses were probably lower, but the standard of living was also lower. Who had CH&A in their homes back then?

Cars were more expensive to buy and maintain back then, quality was lower, which meant they were traded more often. A one-year-old '55 Dodge retained 60% of it's value. Takes five years for an Accord or Camry to drop to 60% of original value.

Hondas have a 105,000 mile tuneup interval.

Yes, the cold war was in full swing. I'm in Florida, I was a little boy during the Cuban missle crisis of 1962. I remember stockpiling foodstuffs in the coat closet at school in case of an attack. It was all moldy and spoiled at the end of the school year.

Remember the fallout shelters and the symbols?

Cars were a major status symbol, and the typical nu-cu-ler family did not have more than two (if that) cars in the
household.

There really wasn't much else to waste their money ON, besides shelter, food, basic clothing (hand-me-downs) and
car expenses.

Everything else was a luxury (like eating outside the house) which was paid for, by SAVED (not borrowed) money.

Can't get enough of these! Takes me back to growing up in the orange groves of SoCal in the pre-space-flight-fifites. Summer vacations all across the U.S... Staying in motels exactly like these! HELP! Life wasn't better back then, just a heck of lot more of it! Duck and Cover! LOL!

Get me outta here! I'm living in the future!
