Expert Posts: 2473 Location: Dalveen, Queensland, Australia | Dwayne, you can avoid that moire pattern if you rephotograph rather than use a scanner... Just hold a digital camera over the picture at a comfortable distance, make sure that the pic is parallel as you can get it on all four sides with the viewfinder frame and shoot it in good natural light, preferably not in the sun. Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | The CHP instructor is driving a 58 Dodge, with some sort of PLY/generic-MoPar steering wheel and horn ring. Just look how nicely constructed that car's seat is. In that Pennzoil ad, you can see where a graphic-artist has added the 'bubble-gum' machine, and that 'star-license-plate', onto an illustration of a typical CRL hardtop. That's no real PD-car, there.

Elite Veteran Posts: 990 | No, no, I really enjoy these pictures, with the 50's cars and the areas of the country. It's amazing how things have changed over the years, doubt many of those buildings are still here today. Bear in mind, a '57 Plymouth was nothing in '57. Who would take a picture of one? In '67 a '57 Plymouth, if it had survived that long, was a used car one step out of the junkyard. There are a lot things and cars I wish I had photographed or saved from my childhood. Who would have thought?

Yes indeed - obviously.
Keep posting those FL postcards from the 50s and 60s though. It's the next best thing to having a time machine or a Tardis.

Location: Parts Unknown | Both of those Spokane structures survive, although Deaconess Hospital is buried under many facelifts. The Catholic Church largely looks the same. Too bad all the cars today are crap. I got a laugh. As I scrolled down, both the Central City and Silverton shots had me saying "Hey, that's .... " before I got to the ID at the bottom ! If those 1880's buildings made it to 1960, they were pretty much safe from wanton demolition.

They have a car show literally around the corner on Main St. in woodbridge. As for the bridgewater diner, it stands too, remodeled though, and there's a show across the highway at the now fudruckers, at the time a forrest. Let's start with another NJ diner attracting ForwardLooking customers and in the second postcard why didn't The El Camino Motel buy one instead of a Ranchero. Elite Veteran Posts: 990 | TraveLodge was the economy motel of its day. My father stayed there when he was paying for the motel room. There was no El Camino in 1961 thru 1963, which is probably why the El Camino motel had a Ranchero. Yes, Pompano Beach, Florida was and still is an affluent area.

Expert Posts: 2308 Location: The Bat Cave, Fairborn, OH | I got stuck in Kingman, AZ in the middle of June in 1979 on my way to LA. I was driving a Jap captive import (Plymouth {Mitsuibishi} Arrow) and my fuel pump went out. The way the engine was designed, when I lost the fuel pump I also lost the oil pressure. Kingman didn't have a Plymouth dealer so the mechanic had to send away to Phoenix for a new pump. And they got the wrong one the first time. I had the 2 Litre engine and the mechanic asked for a pump to fit the smaller 1.6 liter engine. It was a long weary four days I spent in that town at the La Quintera Inn as the Greyhound bus trundled between Phoenix and Kingman with the necessary part. It was so hot that when I walked to the restaurant from the hotel in flip-flops to take my meals the heat from the asphalt road blistered my feet something fierce. Expert Posts: 3069 Location: Scotland | Here's a well travelled and photographed '58 DeSoto, the first one taken at Buellton Motel I actually saw this postcard on the wall of that motel's reception one day I stopped there after having some Andersen's Pea Soup across the road, the reason I went into the motel was there was a Forward Look car parked there and I had a nice chat with the original Mom and Pop owners who told me about how good it was in the days in the postcard. We reckon the DeSoto belonged to the photographer for Plastichrome postcards. Veteran Posts: 210 Location: San Diego, CA | I think if you will notice, the last 3 posted cards have the same De Soto with the white hood in them. If the motel managers memory is correct, that was the photographer's car in the picture, as it is in all of them. What are the odds of more then one Desoto modified in that manner?

Location: Parts Unknown | Methinks Vedette is right ..... it is the photographist's car. Is it just me, of does the mismatched body panel just scream "white trash" and any and all measures should be taken immediately to get that hood painted to match ? I do not feel this way so strongly about non-finned cars, but it really bugs me to see a finned car with missing wheel covers, dirty, dented up, or with the off-color door, etc. I feel this way about real Googie architecture too. It does not work well with modifications, non-matching additions, updates, etc. I see the period and the style as being such a pinnacle, or purity of style, that it just needs to be in good representative form of it looks bad. 1920's or 1940's styling, not such a big deal. Googie stuff ? Just doesn't adapt well. I sure do enjoy this thread.

Doctor DeSoto |

Location: Parts Unknown | suburban61 - 2008-12-16 3:06 AM Doctor DeSoto - 2008-12-06 2:26 PM Is it just me, of does the mismatched body panel just scream "white trash" and any and all measures should be taken immediately to get that hood painted to match ? I do not feel this way so strongly about non-finned cars, but it really bugs me to see a finned car with missing wheel covers, dirty, dented up, or with the off-color door, etc. I see the period and the style as being such a pinnacle, or purity of style, that it just needs to be in good representative form of it looks bad. 1920's or 1940's styling, not such a big deal. Googie stuff ? Just doesn't adapt well. I sure do enjoy this thread. :) gees Doc DeS, you'd simply tear your hair out at the sight of my wagon at the moment then... lol.... :) ********************************* I trust you are making "every effort" to make that old tub look spiffy, right ? Remember, I am the guy with his car in bare metal, sans nose clip, the interior piled with parts .... It is supposed to hit 17 below zero tonight. We wrapped up the dirt work for the shop about 2 hours before the snow started falling. I really wanted to be working in the new shop this winter, but it just wasn't to be. When spring comes it will be full speed ahead ! Next winter will be spent warm and indoors, welding and fabbing the last of the metal. I want to paint the DeSoto the following summer (if not sooner) .... no more mismatched body panels !
