Parking in both Pittsburgh and some of the surrounding suburbs was rather informal outside of Downtown and away from the main arterials well into the 1970s.

As automobiles grew wider, parking with part of a car over and past the curb was necessary for streetcars, trucks and buses to pass.

Ray, here are some more body panels for you to straighten after you smooth out the coupe's sheetmetal. These were taken in Chicago:

Picture was taken circa 1961-62. Four to five year old "out of style" vehicle.....I tend to agree with you.

At Al's Auto Wrecking there sat a creme and coral 58 CRL 2HT with the nose punched in about like that. The car was remarkably nice, outside of having sat in a wrecking yard for 20 years. It had something like 800 miles on the odometer. Al said it was wrecked right after being driven off the lot. Next to it sat a 57 CRL 2HT and on the other side was a Regal Lancer in black and bronze ! There were so many spectacular cars in the wrecking yard. I wish I had bought all three of those Dodges and just put them away.

Notice the '61 Buick in the showroom in one of these photos. That makes the Impala last year's model, as dealers seldom put the previous year's inventory inside the showroom back then. However, there is also a '57 Chevrolet in there, so maybe it was one of those rare indoor used car showrooms. Or maybe a former showroom now used a part of the service center. I've seen both situations. But looking again, it appears that the '57 is in an older showroom, across the street.

I knew a kid in second grade whose parents had '60 Impala four door hardtop like the one pictured. The father was going to replace it in 1967. He was taking a new 1967 Mercury for a test drive when somebody ran a stop or yield sign, totalling both cars. So the Mercury his dad was driver probably didn't even have 800 miles on it, even if it was a demonstrator.

They wound up keeping the Impala for a while longer.

Looks like a preety good crash and guess what you don't see?? A s**t load of rescue personal. If that was a crashe today they would have 2-3 cops a firetruck or two and some ambulances. Just shows the cars where tougher and so where the people

Don't know about where you live, but the real issue here today is that they leave the cars where they come to rest for way too long! No effort to keep traffic moving, create as much havoc as they can...

The other thing that's changed since those days is the willingness of people to proceed to litigation. That would definitely account for a lot of the personnel that turn up at crashes, as nobody wants to be blamed for any tardy treatment of scratches and bruises.

Kenny J., do you know the city where the '56 Chrysler / '60 Impala collision occurred? Was this in Chicago? I have a friend who was well-acquainted with the old Buick dealerships in the Chicago area, and would like to ask him if he can identify the dealership.

That Olds' hood ornament must have made quite an impression, on that pedestrian.

Everybody notice how CLOSE that Chubbie parked behind that Dodge (or vice-versa)? NO????

It appears that that 60 Chub may have been attempting to make a left turn, out onto the boulevard, in front of
the on-coming CHRY, and that the CHRY might have attempted to steer to his left (never a good idea) to
try to go around the front of the Chev .

I don't think that the direction/point-of-impact suggests that the CHRY turned left, in front of the on-coming Generic Motors car.

That 57 Dodge's W/S shows the effect of having laminated "safety glass" construction; no nasty sharp-shards
on the adjacent glass areas (perfect for severing jugulars) and only a nice neat oval separation that looks
suspiciously like the shape of the top of a head.

Also : LOL: the Dodge's driver probably BENEFITTED from hitting that tree head-on, instead of having one of
the non-forgiving frame "horns" come up against that tree. The collapsing frontal sheet metal probably served to cushion/absorb
a considerable amount of the collision force.

What kind of car is this? It looks like a small foreign car but it doesn't look like anything I'm familiar with. Given as this picture was taken in British Columbia it may be a car that was imported into Canada alone.

Looks like you're spot on!

The famous P4 range, introduced in 1949, saw the introduction of the- Rover 75, although the designation '75' had also been used on the previous P3 model. The car cost £1106. The 'Cyclops' Rover (so called because of its centrally mounted foglamp) was the forerunner of one of the most successful of Rover's car ranges and it would be this 75 that, until now, was the best remembered. The P4 range went on to be produced with various modifications up to May 1964 with the 75 model surviving until 1959.

Showing that you can't win 'em all...

As far as we were concerned here in Australia, that wasn't a small car. But whatever, they were very sturdily built and I remember my dad saying once that even some of the hidden places had chromed acorn nuts holding things together.

I would say post 'em. Gotta love those Forward Looks. When I graduated from high School in the 60s they were the most common car on the budget used car lot. I wish I had bought up all of those 57-60 Chrysler, DeSoto and Dodges that were on offer as "bangers" ($95 to $350) that I saw in those days.

In general imports are rarely seen in the pictures and I guess they where quite uncommon in everyday traffic at the time.
There's just a few of the independent American makes visible as well.
My observations from those pics/postcards are it shows an average share of each make/year at the time they where spotted and the older models disappeared rater soon.

I worked for a Chrysler Plymouth dealership in1964. Since mostly Chryslers and Plymouths were traded in on new models of the same brand, our used car lot was full of finned cars. Our back row (lowest priced cars) was almost exclusively '55-59 Chrysler products. I remember one day when I sold a salmon and white '56 New Yorker 4-door sedan and a white '57 New Yorker 2-door hardtop for $100 each. It was a big payday for me...5% of the gross. Both cars were high mileage, but had no serious problems.

Jayne wasn't in a FWDLK'er at the time she lost her head, to a flat-bed trailer, and, was Mickey Haggerty driving,
at the time of the event?

Brent, you never revealed the answer to your question (from a lot of personal research, I presume).

Ha!

As "revealed" to me, the answer was so your axx doesn't slam shut.

I recall when the first Infiniti cars came out ..... ugly, bulbous things, I came up beside one at a light. It was summer and the windows were down. I hollered that question at the driver from my DeSoto. We never got around to the answer. She picked up on the allegation, made an indignant face, and sped away.

Nothing like spending $40,000 1990 dollars on a car styled to look like a lawn trout.

I believe Ms. Mansfield met her demise in a mid-1960s Buick.

The car still existed in its as-crashed condition in the late 1990s.

Talk about putting the final "Nail Head" in the coffin............

As Wikipedia has it :

While in Biloxi, Mississippi, for an engagement at the Gus Stevens Supper Club, Mansfield stayed at the Cabana Courtyard Apartments, which were near the site of the supper club. After a June 28, 1967 evening engagement, Mansfield, Brody, and their driver, Ronnie Harrison, along with the actress's children Miklós, Zoltán, and Mariska, set out in Stevens' 1966 Buick Electra 225 for New Orleans, where Mansfield was to appear in an early morning television interview. Prior to leaving Biloxi, the party made a stop at the home of Rupert and Edna O'Neal, a local family that lived nearby. After a late dinner with the O'Neals, during which the last photographs ever taken of Ms. Mansfield were shot, the party set out on the trip to New Orleans. On June 29 at approximately 2:25 a.m., on U.S. Highway 90, the car crashed into the rear of a tractor-trailer that had slowed down because of a truck spraying mosquito fogger. The automobile struck the rear of the semi tractor and underrode it. Riding in the front seat, the adults were killed instantly; the children riding in the rear survived with minor injuries.[35]

Rumors that Mansfield was decapitated are untrue, though she did suffer severe head trauma. This urban legend was spawned by the appearance in police photographs of a crashed automobile with its top virtually sheared off, and what resembles a blonde-haired head tangled in the car's smashed windshield. It is believed that this was either a wig that Mansfield was wearing or was her actual hair and scalp.[36] The death certificate stated that the immediate cause of Mansfield's death was a "crushed skull with avulsion of cranium and brain."[37] Following her death, the NHTSA began requiring an underride guard, a strong bar made of steel tubing, to be installed on all tractor-trailers. This bar is also known as a Mansfield bar.[38][39]

Those little GMC buses in Madison, Wisconsin were still in use throughout the 1970s. They were very long lived wherever they ran.
