This thread should be a website, some many great pics. Will be nice to see a then and now picture.

I have been gathering some for my Milwaukee mass transit web site. It would be fun if people here could take some pix of the places in those old postcards.

Kenny, those sets above are outstanding!

Who would've known something that looks like nothing more than a little service road used to be the road bed for railroad cars? Just part of the intrigue with these before & after sets.

Here's a couple of before & after websites I visit from time to time:

http://www.atlantatimemachine.com/ - Pretty much everywhere you could think of to visit in Atlanta (suburbs and parks amongst many other locations), but there's lots of vintage downtown Atlanta images with public transoprt stuff you dig, Kenny.

http://www.springfieldrewind.com/ - The "now" pics are taken at precisely the location of the before pics and a mouse rollover of the "then" pic is all that's needed for the comparison. Great stuff going back to at least the 1910's.

Here's The Dalles, OR where I went to see about "Walther-Williams Motors”, the dealer that originally sold my Dodge CRL D500 new in 1957, located at E 3rd St (I-30) & Federal St.

They went out of business somewhere in the early sixties. But their painted name is still clearly visible on the adjacent building. Paints containing led were still allowed in these years.

The photo has been taken from here:

Many antique stores here in the States have file card collections of old postcards for sale, oft-times catalogued by subject or age.

You are right, .... you can just fall into them studying every detail. This was my childhood. I just love this thread !

A lot of the images are liberated from the jamesvictor epay postcard auction site.

Everybody notice that Model A(?) Fart(?) in the fast lane, coming out of Fort Worth, above?

This will show you some picture post cards from the area
where you grew up, taken back when there were penny post cards.
What did your town look like according to Penny Postcards?

Click on the State and then the county to view.
Click on the postcard to enlarge.

Here's another Milwaukee photo. Atkinson Avenue, between Capitol Drive and Teutonia Avenue, circe 1964-'65. The trackless trolleys (electric buses) used to turn around here to head back inbound after the section to the north of here was replaced by diesel buses when the city did some street rebuilding. The rest of the system was "dieselized" on June 20th, 1965.

The photographer, Paul Weyrich, was co-founder of the Heritage Foundation as well as the Free Congress Foundation. He passed away during December, 2008.

Now look for the Forward Look car in this photo :

..Speaking of 1959 Chryslers, there's a 300E convertible, parked with its top down, in the Balboa Island Garage PC, above
here, and, there's a 59 IMP convertible parked at that Juneau AL motel, too, up above here.

Nobody's called me on it, yet, so before they do: that's actually a 1957 IMP convertible (see its front bumper profile?) in
that Juneau postcard, above here.

Seeing these photos reminds me of the road trips we used to take when I was a young kid around California in our '56 Chevy station wagon.  you would spend half of your vacation driving, but that was a also great part of the vacation.  We're all in too much of a hurry nowadays.  Someday, I'm taking the wife and my son on one of those vacations.  Maybe the old Route 66, or what's left of it.  I've always wanted to get a group of folks to do this with.  Ahhh, someday......

That postcard, of the 58 Soto, at the Townhouse Motel, just sold for $61.00, with two bidders going 'at' it,
over eight bids, and with the winning bidder having placed a maximum-bid amount of something higher than
his winning bid amount, of $61.00 .

If this had been a real auction, the 'losing' bidder could have possibly entered an even higher bid, and so-on, until one of
them got monetarily exhausted.

It would have been fun to watch.

And, Sid; a lot of us were around back then, to see and to experience, daily, what ya'll are seeing on these photos.

We just took 'it' all for granted, just as we-all are doing, right now, today, when we look around us and see sights
and things that a generation-or-three will be envious of US for being able to experience.

I hope that I'm not the only one, here, who has tried to pretend, at times, that he was a time traveler who has returned
to TODAY, from the far-distant future , to experience the past as we are living it, right now.

Because, if we were able to go back in time, the locals would feel every bit as bored as we are feeling, today, with their
own experiences.

Well, this Vancouver CCF-Brill trolley bus isn't a Forward Look Mopar, but the ad on the back almost qualifies it to be in this thread :

I am sure the ad is for building air conditioners, but I do like it anyway. My house is still running on it's 1960 Chrysler Airtemp Furnace.

I might be mistaken, but the main street photo of Madrid, OR sure looks to have a rare '61 DeSoto in it. That would have been a rare sight even in those days.

Back then bus advertising was geared toward consumer spending. Note the gentleman cooling himself in a kiddy's pool. Definitely aimed to the overheated consumer, either home owner or renter. Also note the Chrysler pentastar symbol in the top left corner. Note sure when this photo was taken but it was sometime between 1963 (Pentastar adopted) and 1975 (twin bus route numbers dropped, one for each direction, and #18 ceased to exist). The bus is turning off West Hastings on to Richards - the building is still there but the bank moved to new digs on Burrard Street in the 1990's. There is a Blenz coffee shop on the main floor now.

An earlier photo of a Pullman Standard trolley caught me off guard, wondering where Hardy's was in Winnipeg, which is where I grew up. Then I noticed it was for Milwaukee. Winnipeg Transit used the same cream over orange and purchased a couple of dozen Pullman Standards, same model, from Providence, Rhode Island. In the 1950's American cities were dumping the trolley bus but in Canada cities were expanding their coverage. As Canadian Car & Foundry stopped building trolley buses in 1953, Canadian transit systems had to get them somewhere. Vancouver got 50 Pullman Standards from Alabama in 1955 (I believe), complete with segregation signs.

Winnipeg also purchased some 1950 American Car & Foundry trolley buses from Flint, Michigan around 1956, which Winnipeg sold to Vancouver in the late 1960's and Vancouver, in turn, sold them to Mexico City in the late 1970's or early 1980's. Some of them were still running about seven years ago. AC&F and CC&F made good buses.

A lot of us were around back then, to see and to experience, daily, what ya'll are seeing on these photos.

****************************************

Is it just me, or do others go to locations and see what used to be there ?

As an example, the photo of Lookout Pass toward the bottom of page 19. This is only abut 80 miles from me and I have traveled it since it looked just like this. The first time was in a brand new 65 Ford Country Squire and we parked right where that DeSoto sits and walked around a bit. I found some toads in a ditch right there along the road .... interesting stuff to a kid ! The Northern Pacific tunnel went right under the highway there. It remains a long steep climb coming eastbound as the DeSoto is doing, however in 1983 the highway was finally built into freeway configuration and the climb started west of Mullan instead of on the east side of town. No wonder they pulled off to let that 350 cool down ! The east side of the pass is equally steep for a mile or so, but then eases out. Behind the DeSoto about 10 miles is Wallace, Idaho, the location of the last functioning stoplight on the U.S. interstate system. It was bypassed with the 1983 freeway.

This thread is a showcase of my childhood !

'tis, but Airtemp was part of Chrysler, so I said, "What the heck!"

Winnipeg Transit used the same cream over orange and purchased a couple of dozen Pullman Standards, same model, from Providence, Rhode Island.

Providence tried to convert some of their trolley buses to internal combustion when they got rid of electric service. It didn't work very well.

Milwaukee's last order of Pullman-Standards, in the photo I posted, were 1948 Model 45 CX. The Providence Pullman-Standards which went to Winnipeg were 1948 Model 44 CX, virtually identical.

Milwaukee didn't have any Hardy's during the 1960s. Are you sure that wasn't the photo I posted showing "Hack's Furniture"?

I periodically find Milwaukee transit stuff mis-labeled as Winnipeg and have found what I've thought was Milwaukee transit pictures to actually be Winnipeg.

You're right - Hack's Furniture. The photo shows Hack's Furniture with a Pullman trolley and next to it a recent photo of the same location, this time with a New Flyer low floor (New Flyer is based in Winnipeg).

Vancouver actually converted their 50 Flyer E800 trolley buses to diesel - got nicknamed "triesels". They were supposed to have been retired when Vancouver purchased their 246 Flyer E902 models in 1983, but their bodies were still in good shape so they got another 20 years out of them. Of course, the Flyer D800 diesel buses had the same body and chassis so conversion was possible, something I suspect was a bit more difficult with the Pullmans as they came only with electric motors.

The E800 models, and the E700 models before them, had electrics taken from retired 1950's Canadian Car trolleys but the E902 models had everything new, including a battery backup system when there were problems with overhead wire or broken poles. The E902 models were replaced last year by a new trolley bus based on the New Flyer low floor models. Vancouver purchased both 40' and articulated 60' versions. And they started the numbering at 2201, so there is a new 2229 on the road.

Not Forward Look, but included because of the Desoto/Plymouth dealership. You can see inside the dealership window. This is Milwaukee, 1948.

Bill can probably tell you that the P.A.Y.E. (Pay As You Enter) style streetcar seen in this photo was developed in Montreal and adapted by many U.S, transit systems. These cars were well built and lasted almost fifty years in service in several locations.

As many have said this was their childhood, this is the childhood I wish I could have. A much, better, easier, simpler, AMERICAN childhood. I know it wasn't all peaches and cream back then, but surely it was a better time than now.

Here is a link to another forum with similar photos. They are not specific to Forwardlook, but some Forwardlooks show up in many photos by default. Enjoy....

That horizontal crease has all the earmarks of getting the car too close to one of those old style one-piece overhead garage door side bars. The ones with the big springs down low. I have first hand knowledge of this concept with my old 61 NY'er coupe.

Or are there more than one Bishop in CA?

Some of those same streetcars (trams) are still running between the Boston suburbs of Mattapan and Ashmont as I type this. Below is a recent photo of one of these rebuilt cars.

And below that is a mid 1960s shot of a Boston streetcar in the short lived gray, yellow and white paint. Can you find the Forward Look Plymouth in the second photo?
