Since it was never driven in the winter, it pretty much looks just like that today. But as I noted in my email to you, the air force blue is not the original color. I was back in Ohio this weekend but had no time to even lift the garage door to take a peek at it. Dave Edited by Swept57 2008-04-17 5:40 PM

Location: Parts Unknown | Is it just me, or do other people find the 61 Plymouth and Dodge look 100 times better in person ? Yeah sure, they look fine in the photos, but get up next to one and they really are exciting ! I was out helping my brother chase a fuel problem with his Polara last weekend and find I always marvel at how striking that car is up close and personal. Photos just don't do it justice. I am so glad to see wagons finally getting the positive attention they deserve. Three cheers for Wagon Fever !

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | Adriana, FWIW (not-much) , I really like the 61 PLY's front end appearance without that optional grille guard guy disrupting the appearance of the waterfall-like grille. If anyone recalls Paul Garlick's having created a 1961 Plodge, by adding a PLY front clip to a DOD body, you will recall that the over-all appearance of the car was VERY attractive. As the 61 DOD/PLY's were completely different from the 60's, it's too bad that the DOD didn't have what turned out to be the 61 PLY grille, and, the 61 PLY grille is not all that different, from the 62 DOD, AND.....the 62 PLY has a grille not-all-that- different, from the 61 DOD!!!! Hmmmm...maybe they WERE switched at birth, in 1961.

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | I'm a fan of factory options as much as anyone, but , MAN! that 61 PLY grille/bumper guard just ruins (imho) the shape- apearance of the water-fall grille. It gives the car a sort of 'under-bite' , or angry Bull Dog, look. You will REALLY like its "Jetson's" space age dashboard and square (optional, right?) steering wheel! Veteran Posts: 188 Location: Adelaide Australia | yeah i know what you mean! some options i like for the '61's is the astro wheel! and the mascara inserts (not sure of there proper name, but the chrome inserts that fit above the headlights!) if anyone has either of these two things spare id be interested in purchasing them! my wagon has the am radio and heater options, for a (bottom of the range) deluxe suburban thats ok, i guess! cheers adriana

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7400 Location: northern germany | i like the bumper grille bar and can't stand the "mascara inserts" it looks mean and powerfull without but with the bright headlight trim it looses the sinister look, makes it look like bambi, also that headlight trim looks out of place looking from the side, it spoils the lines. also the front end looks less unique since the headlight trim makes the headlight area look like a part of the grille, giving it a squarish look. but i love the optional front fender chrome spears.

Veteran Posts: 188 Location: Adelaide Australia | people either love or hat the fury bumper or mascara inserts. i kind of agree, i think that the mascara inserts look good on some body colours (usually the darker ones) and out of place on other (usually lighter colours) i like that little chrome bit that goes down the side of the fender, gives it a kinda custom edge! i dont like the fury bumper for the sinister reason, looks like it will run you down and eat you! lol. what are the fender spears? have you got a picture? i really need to get my hands on a '61 accessories catalogue! cheers adriana

I love these cars good to see that they are begining to get noticed, bout time I also own 50's ch***vys, Cad**ys and F*%ds but my fury is my fav probably because of its futuristic space age, jetsons styling and it was the car I learned to drive in at age 11! Expert Posts: 3155 Location: NY & VT | Having had a '61 also - my take is they look best without the grill bar AND without the headlight inserts - less is more! But TEHO, and it's a good thing that we don't all like the exact same things! I think they look best in light colors also. I'd certainly consider the '62 Chrysler wagon as a FL - it had the exact same body as the '61, and the Dodge Custom 880 continued that body right through '64 - while the styling was toned down and refined slightly, it is clearly still a Forward Look car, the very last of the breed. Chrysler Corp continued with that body due to popular demand for a full size Dodge car and they didn't have the resources to reskin it in the way that they did with the '63/64 Newport/NY/300. Forward Look was basically an advertising slogan that was not used in ads after '59, as far as I can recall. We now arbitrarily label all the cars 55-61 that way, but the '62-64 cars above were the carryover version of the same cars. They are classic FL cars, as opposed to the stillborn full size '62 DeSoto/Dodge which was cancelled for production by late 1960, and which looked like a larger 62 Dodge Dart/440 & 62 Plymouth cross. I have pics of it in Richard Langworth's excellent Postwar Chrysler book - (now out of print). Edited by firedome 2008-04-23 10:16 AM

Exner Expert 19,174 posts. Neil passed away 18 Sep 2015. You will be missed, Neil! Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | What's interesting, about this '62 wagon, is that in 1961, the CHRY wagon body was a 100% carry-over, from 1960's finned body, but the front clip was pretty-much identical to what you see HERE, carried over to the 1962 model, and, this 1962 wagon-body was carried-over, from the 1961 small-body wagons. So, THIS car is PURE FWDLK!
