Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | Finally got around to doing something that's needed being done for a couple few years, now. Had bought a new front fender antenna, but its under-fender mounting plate didn't conform well to the fender, which allowed the antenna to move around, across the fender, because the lock-nut couldn't screw down far enough so as to jam the upper chrome base tightly against the fender. Slow news day, so, got out a 1 /1/4" washer and drilled-out its center (carefully) to 3/4", to slide over the internal threads of the antenna, so that the lock-nut could exert proper pressure against the antenna's fender base. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9707 Location: So. Cal | Is that setup from Keisler? I take it they still don't have the highly advertised SS700 trans ready yet that was supposed to be done 3 years ago? If I had a manual trans setup, I would probably go for that too. 5 on the floor is a lot better than 3 on the tree. This is for your '56 Plymouth right? Which floor shifter location did you use - the B-body or A-body version? Edited by Powerflite 2013-12-17 4:10 PM

Which floor shifter location did you use - the B-body or A-body version? I pieced the conversion together using parts from numerous sources. I used the middle shifter location because it lined up with the hole in the tunnel from the previous installation. Location: Parts Unknown | Tell us about your choice of 5-speed manuals and what else you shopped and why you went with what you did. I have a looming same-decision for the DeSoto and feel tech has changed a lot since I researched this. At the time, a Richmond Gears unit seemed the ultimate choice.

Expert Posts: 3780 Location: NorCal | Comparing the existing in-car measurements of my old setup (NV2500) and the TKO engineering drawings, I placed the shifter location 1/2" further forward in the existing 4" hole in the floor so that was a determining factor. I chose the TKO 600 because the gear ratios best suited my needs and the centerline shifter position was better for me than having to hack up my carpet/floors for a side-shifter model like the Richmond. The bellhousing is a Hurst #OMW-1414SB and it dialed in .005" TIR. (.0025" off center) right out of the box. I used a Wilwood external pull-type slave cylinder to actuate the factory throwout fork. I considered using a hydraulic clutch release bearing but heard too many stories of them leaking. Most projects like this don't go smoothly for me but every aspect of this one went so smooth I was waiting for an aw-s**t that never came. Expert Posts: 1530 Location: ZH, Switzerland | I removed the steering pump, opened it and got two new o rings (a big diameter and a small diameter) for the place between both parts of the main body. The diameter of the rope is slightly bigger than the original one. At the desk in the shop of a o ring producing company nearby I told to the sales guy I'm applying hot synthetic oil. I got both rings for free. But I put some big coins into their coffee cash box. Then I torqued the screws to 17 lbs ft as addressed in the service bulletin 95. Tomorrow I want to install the modified steering pump again. If it's still leaking I'm going to replace the o rings at the output and the input flange. The shaft seal looks like new and doesn't leak. Happy Motoring! Dieter

Location: Parts Unknown | 57burb - 2013-12-20 1:02 PM Did a quick mockup to see if the bumper fits as it should. Yep... =============================================== Interesting. I knew it should bolt up without a hitch, but don't think I have ever tried it. Looks funny. The 57 Chrysler and 57-58 DeSoto rank in the top 3 spots of favorite Forward Look cars, so I keep them mentally "separated", even if I know they are a direct swap. I guess I just don't "see" them intermixing. The more I look at those directional/parking lights, the more I want to pit them in my 58, whose inexplicable little round floating versions are just plain pointless to the overall design.

I'm putting a Tremec TR-4250 in the Chrysler. It was a short-lived variant of the TR-3500 that came about before the TKO series. Brent, you're going to put a stick in your convertible??

Location: Parts Unknown | That is the plan. Use a modern, side-loader 5-speed with the 1960 floor shifter above the floor for "period" appearance. The trans will be chosen based on whatever meets the performance needs/demands of the other build specs .... basically laid out: 383 M-block with 906 heads, 8.5:1 compression, a special cam whose numbers I cannot remember off the top of my head, windage tray, and whatever "ease of operation" details I can add to squeeze more miles and less drag out of it. Rear end will be 2.76 for max fuel economy, so the remaining numbers to be dialed in are the rpm power curves to give good lift-off in lower gears, climbing out into some long legs at the top for highway driving. I will F/I this car in the process as well. The basic idea being to make a strong runner with good fuel economy that runs on pump gas, and to do it in a way that still looks like it might be 1960 without close examination. I want to drive the wheels off this thing !

Expert Posts: 3967 Location: DFW, TX | Fuel economy? Seems like a strange goal with a 2-ton, big block '50s convertible! IMO I would take that compression ratio up about a point to gain back some mechanical efficiency. Modern gas is actually better than ever at controlling detonation, but the ethanol content is still a problem for our old fuel systems regardless of the engine being fed. Funny how some things we're doing are paralleling each other. I have a chrome early '60s Hurst floor shifter with a plain white shift knob that I'll be using. My pedal assembly is from a '58 V8 Suburban. And I have a Hilborn mechanical EFI that will eventually make its way to the 392. The goal isn't fuel economy though, this one is a bit of a hot rod. Which I'm sure you'll agree is a funny goal for a 2-ton, big block '50s coupe, heh. Speaking of EFI, have you ever decided what to do about those Fuel Injection badges? Every time they're mentioned, there's a bunch of dust stirred up about getting a batch made, but nothing ever seems to come of it. Edited by 57burb 2013-12-20 10:38 AM

Location: Parts Unknown | Well, since it moves along pretty good as built, I am only trying to lean it out, performance-wise for road tripping. There is a lot of "slop" in the power-to-wheels efficiency of these that can be winnowed out. The 8.5:1 compression ratio was suggested per my builder friends. That was 10 years ago. Perhaps tech will change before I actually do it. That is why I am asking about the latest and greatest 5-speed opinions ..... maybe something better has come along since I looked into it ??? The F/I badges will be repopped when the time comes. Again, by the time I need them, someone may beat me to it. If I poured my energies into it now, they'd just sit in a box with the Adventurer Powered tags and all my other junk, you know ? As it sits, I need a little warmed weather and to get on my body panel fab and welding. What I really need is a stable job, so I can start spending money on finishing the shop. But as it is, I am holding my $$ close to the vest until something comes along.

I guess I wasn't paying that close of attention to your photo above ! Each of the Tremec TKO transmissions has a limited range of ratios to select from, the TKO 500 would have been cheaper and would handle the power I'm making but it has a "granny" 3.27 1st gear and a .68 5th gear. The TKO 600 has a 2.87 1st gear and a .64 5th gear. Here's a pic of the TKO with the shifter in the middle location. Location: Parts Unknown | The toploader is certainly a better way to go, in terms of cabin comfort and use. The old sideloader T-85 DeSoto was not too intrusive, but the A-833 in my Coronet really sticks into the "OPS" area and is a workout to operate. I find I have to stop every 100 miles or so and walk around, as the shifter causes me to hold my right knee at an odd side angle that starts to get painful and spasm. I only want to use a sideloader as a matter of "period" correct appearance, o/w I'd jump on a toploader. /

Expert Posts: 2312 Location: Arizona | I had my 20+ year old tires replaced. They still had plenty of tread left and no sidewall cracks but every time I drove on the freeway I was worried they would fly apart. So got some $50 each replacements at Discount. Total cost out the door was $290 with mounting and tax and I'll be getting a $30 gift card in the mail for using my Discount Tire Club/Credit card. Wished I could afford wider whitewalls but just can't justify it. The difference on the freeway amazed me. Even though the old tires really didn't seem "bad", nothing obviously out of balance or anything, the car just feels much better on the freeway. With the old tires it really didn't feel very good to be going over 60ish. WIth the new ones I was up to 70ish without even noticing I was going that fast. Well worth the money.

Expert Posts: 3575 Location: Netherlands | Doc, I would strongly advise against that smogger 8.5:1 CR you're planning. Fuel-economy comes from engines with good power down low in the rpm range. Low cr-engine are inefficient. High cr creates more torque and makes a car 'nimble' to drive. As far as making FI emblems, just wait long enough you can have them 3D printed for a small price. I've been finetuning the audio system in my '57 Chrysler. Installed new speakers in the package tray. At first I had created simple speaker boxes which laid on the rearseat. In combination with the subwoofer in the trunk they still worked OK but they were actually ment for use in my daily '73 Dart. Now with the new speakers in the '57 the sound is very 'full'.
