Expert Posts: 1479 Location: Pacific Northwest | Can I get some more details on what I just found? Block: P31-199566 (301?) Intake: 1619826 ('57 4bbl?) Heads: 1618721-4 and -5 Exhaust: 1634724 (both sides) Distributor: 1689318 IBP 4003 2M281269 (dual points) Tag is missing on the WCFB carb. Choke flap was removed. Not exactly sure if the is another number I should/could be looking for to aid in identification. I also got a starter and a generator off this engine. From what I have read this set up would/could have came as an option on the Savoy and the Belvedere. Thanks (301powerpack.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 301powerpack.jpg (96KB - 217 downloads)

Expert Posts: 1506 Location: Colo Spgs | Hola Andrew For The 1957 Production year - there were two 4 bbl'd V8's used in Plymouths. One was 301 Cubic Inches and one was 318 Cubic Inches. If you clean very good any debris on the left front of the block --- just below The Head Gasket --- you will find a Stamped ID Code. The 30 = 301 Cubes and 31 = 318 Cubes. This will show what Engine Block you have in front of you. This will delete any various "other thoughts" . ---------------------- Do you have a photo of the left side of this engine ? Expert 5K+ Posts: 8443 Location: Perth Australia | I think there is more to this engine Whats with the breathers and the "T" handle rocker cover bolts? Blue engine colour and the exhaust manifolds dont have a generator mount on them Maybe a truck or industrial engine?

Elite Veteran Posts: 1116 Location: CA | P31 is a '57 301. Definitely oddities but valve covers are bolt-on. Edited by Finsinthemirror 2016-05-31 8:13 PM

Expert Posts: 1479 Location: Pacific Northwest | The story i got was that the previous owners father was a mechanic/racer. He had this engine rebuilt, bored out and re cammed. Raced it for a while until he moved up to a 383.

Expert Posts: 1740 Location: Alaska | The 3 bolt valve covers make at least the heads if not the whole engine newer than 57-58. Not sure when this was changed but the blue color also looks like a factory engine color that was used later. As already mentioned, the right exhaust is newer, also the spin on filter was never used in 57.

Expert Posts: 1506 Location: Colo Spgs | Hola Yo'al The above comments saying the engine appears to be of "A Frankenstein Appearance" is why I stated to look at the Stamped ID Code. This will show what Engine Block you have in front of you. Rodger and Gabby Colo Spgs Edited by Rodger 2016-06-01 12:09 PM

Expert Posts: 1740 Location: Alaska | I thought it was the other way around, 3 bolt valve covers were the later ones. I have 2 ea. 57 301s that are unmolested, I will check them. Edited by 58coupe 2016-06-01 9:51 PM

Expert Posts: 1740 Location: Alaska | I stand corrected, the 57 301 is stamped P31 and it has 3 bolt valve covers. I also have a 318 about 65-66 that has 2 bolt valve covers. What year did Mopar change that?

Expert Posts: 1479 Location: Pacific Northwest | Being there is no external harmonic balancer on this engine, can assume that it is internally balanced?

Expert Posts: 3778 Location: NorCal | Yes, external balance wasn't used until the seventies.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9681 Location: So. Cal | That is about the tallest oil fill tube on a valve cover that I have ever seen. And what was he thinking about the draft tube? Was he planning to stick it out of a hole in the hood?

Expert Posts: 1479 Location: Pacific Northwest | Craigslist ad I thankfully saw not long after it was posted. I honestly don't remember exactly how much I paid but it was cheap. The catch was that I had to pull it out of the '62 Ford truck it was in. I bought it for the 1961 HP Dodge air cleaner. I had no idea that it would be a perfect fit for my Fury. My Fury has an external dampener which is why I asked. The exhaust manifold on the driver's side is a center dump passenger side with the generator mounts cut off of both of them. Spin on oil filter adapter. Not sure when the valve cover modifications were done. No doubt the t handle mod was for track side valve adjustments. Pretty sure this is a power pack engine with a three speed manual trans out of a Belvedere.

Have seen pics of low deck Dodge & Chr w/o, maybe in expectation of low RPM use. Seems you just add a damper to them, best I can recall. Probably on "A" Polys also. Yes, external balance wasn't used until the seventies. Here is a listing of 55-58 Engines that used Item 37 Vibration Dampers. My 56 D500 engine used one.
