Extreme Veteran Posts: 531 Location: Park Hills, KY | Hi, I am going to go to a vintage air Mark IV system in my 60 Windsor. I am currently running the original generator. What do I need to do, and what do I need to purchase to ensure a proper alternator installation? The gentleman installing the air said I need at least 60 amps. I know folks like Ian and others have added air. I am just wondering if the alternator is an upgrade which I could do myself. I am no electrician, but if it is just swapping wires, I can handle it. Thanks in advance.

You can see how I did it in the links below; http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=17460&... http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=69476&... The existing cables from the generator through the firewall, via the Amp-meter and back to the battery are AWG 12. I run with a 50 amp Birdcage alternator and the AWG 12 are not sufficent for such a plausible load. I pulled parallell cables AWG 11, which means that the area is more than doubled. You can mount the charging relay practically in the same holes as the old relay. You must supply the charging relay with an "ignition" 12VDC feed, easiest pulled from the ignition coil resistor. I have used the alternator for one driving season without any problems. It's not a difficult task

They have the 60 Amp Birdcage with double pulley as well. https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/chrysler,1961,new+yorker,6.7l+41...

Expert 5K+ Posts: 5006 | hmm I would like one that's internally regulated... that's probably not going to happen. All the fords are like the GM ones... I could change out the pulley I guess from a later model, they are kind of birdcagey. I cant stand the look of those square ford and GM ones... Im like is that alternator off a S-10 pickup!??? wow
I guess i will hit the pull a part in the spring, walk around for an hour eyeballing alternators. :) I can take a later model one and utilize the brackets. Wont need 140 amp but hey... Alternators are 18$... hah Edited by mikes2nd 2019-01-30 9:34 PM

Expert Posts: 3777 Location: NorCal | I have used two of these 110-AMP GM style one-wire units. Had to fab custom brackets and run a 6-gauge wire directly to the battery. Of course, the ammeter is no longer accurate so I installed a small volt meter. https://www.ebay.com/itm/100-NEW-ALTERNATOR-CHROME-Chevy-110-AMP-1-W... Having said that, it would be nice to run with an alternator. Issues come up when you're stuck in heavy traffic and the generator stops charging when you're idling, and an A/C system will ad more load to the whole charging system of course. Not sure how they dealt with them back in the day, but they did. The Mark-IV system has been in my car since it was nearly new, along with the OEM generator.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 371 | Well my '56 has the original generator and factory A/C and works perfect even when head lights and radio are on. But then again I'm not running a high out put stereo system or halogen/Led lights either, even though leds would probably work great. I even put the stock generator back in my '60 plymouth when I put the 383 in even though I had the car to take the stuff from to convert to the alternator. This was my choice. I'd go with a chrysler aternator and external regulator if I was doing it. I hate seeing gm or ford stuff in a mopar. Saw a '33 plymouth with an LS1 in it and to me it was so very beyond wrong in so many ways.

Expert Posts: 3777 Location: NorCal | Sorry, but if it worked "perfectly", the system would never drop below battery voltage when running. If your ammeter is on the discharge side at idle/low speed with everything on, it's not working perfectly.
