Expert 5K+ Posts: 9912 Location: Lower Mainland BC | I knew that the PowerFlites just had a strainer but I wasn't sure about the cast iron TorqueFlites until just now. I see the pick-up/filter/strainer in the middle of this photo: So I wonder what's on the other side. See below. Any alternatives? If it's the earlier air cooler type, then it's more of a challenge. | ||

Expert Posts: 3779 Location: NorCal | The external filter keeps the cooler clean but doesn't prevent the debris in the pan from getting sucked into the trans. The external filter is like a bypass filter on an engine, only part of the fluid flow goes through it. In an ideal world, both an internal and external filter is the optimum. | ||

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9912 Location: Lower Mainland BC | . Okay. Plan B. How do I thoroughly clean this cast iron strainer? I will start with soaking it in solvent but then? Needs some kind of brush or ?? The transmission shop got it this clean but they think that it still contains grit or whatnot that will hurt their rebuild success. "White spirit (UK) or mineral spirits (US, Canada), also known as mineral turpentine (AU/NZ), turpentine substitute, petroleum spirits, solvent naphtha (petroleum), Varsol, Stoddard solvent, or, generically, "paint thinner", is a petroleum-derived clear liquid used as a common organic solvent in painting." I decided on using "solvent". I used brake cleaner yesterday and that was an improvement. I will soak it in solvent over night and see if I can get a brush (or something) in there and either vacuum or compressed air. | ||

Veteran Posts: 292 Location: Colorful Colorado skier on the license plate | Your screen does not look too bad. I installed cooling line filter kit and have had no problems. These are not the plastic cylinder with magnet, rubber tube install. These are actually filters and come with new flair nuts and are like the 62 -65 kits. You will never need to change it again, unless you have some other type of failure. I even installed these on my old Power Flites. Post Script; have had less problems with the old 2 speed Power Flites than the 3 Speed A-466 Torque Flites. I see you have found out about the front pump problems of the A-466. Richard: I would install a filter in the oil cooler line as you've suggested but the 57 Windsor I am working with is air-cooled with no cooling ports (yet) on the casing. I saw that the 61 front drum band was different than the 57-60 bands but didn't know why. I am supposedly getting one (and maybe) two front pumps early next week and they will be the "high flow" ones with the 0.82" thick rotors. So hopefully it all works. I will continue to clean this filter over the weekend and then take it to the shop next week. Thanks for you comments guys (everyone who responded). | ||
