Expert 5K+ Posts: 9904 Location: Lower Mainland BC | I've been working on killing a small amount of paint bubbling along the roof of my 56 Dodge at the rain gutters. I've got it cleaned up nicely (nice enough for now anyway) and have used some Ford Wimbledon white Dupli-color paint. Initially I thought it was a good match but now I am not liking it because it seems too yellow. I wonder if any one else has found a better alternative. Here are a few examples of 56 Dodges with "white" roofs (including mine in 2017 when it looked white):

Regular Posts: 75 Location: VIrginia | 56D500boy, I too am looking for the same Sapphire White equivalent for my 1955 Dodge Convert. I am retouching the door jams and around the windshield and like you have used "Wimbledon White" Dupli-Color paint. It's close but I am not happy with it. Mine almost looks to be a little more grey. I am using a grey color sandable "filler" primer to fill light scratches. Also looking to paint the rear tail light area and area under trunk lid black (Currently "Heather Rose") which seemed to be a popular paint Tri-color option of the day. Is there an equivalent to the "Onax Black" (Spelling?) available? Here is the current color of my rear tail lights and area under the trunk lid The second is a picture of the taillights and area under the trunk lid I want to change to black.. This is my parts car. Is there an equivalent to the "Onax Black" (Spelling?) available? If it was black, it would be Jewell Black, not Onyx Black which I believe was a 56 Chevy paint. If you are not a purest, I would use Tremclad/Rustoleum gloss black in that area. I used Tremclad gloss white when I did my taillight area (I didn't like one of the other options that I looked at (not Wimbledon white) because it was too yellow. I might decide to use Tremclad gloss white on the roof too. (Ditzler55DodgePaintCodes.jpg) Attachments ---------------- Ditzler55DodgePaintCodes.jpg (53KB - 162 downloads)

Black doesn't have 500 shades like white does so you can use just about anything. The white from this period is an off-white. Typically an egg-shell white is a good match. If you paint it a modern bright white, it will look very out-of-place.

Regular Posts: 75 Location: VIrginia | Thanks for the correct name for the black color Jewell Black. You have a wealth of information on theses '55 - '56 Dodges and enjoy your posts of how you restore/upgrade various items. I am not a purest and open to any suggestions. Nice job by the way of painting the white on the taillight. I was just curious but in your taillight picture where the trunk lid closes it looks like the Heather Rose paint color or is it red primer?

I was just curious but in your taillight picture where the trunk lid closes it looks like the Heather Rose paint color or is it red primer? Thanks. I'm trying to gather and share info about the "orphans", i.e. the 55-56 King-pin Dodges, newer bodies but old old school suspension, whenever possible. To paint that taillight area, I removed the chromed pot-metal surround and the taillights, then sanded and filled (spot putty and high build primer) before painting with the Tremclad gloss white. Very white. The "rose" bits in that photo was spot putty that I put in in the gasket groove after wire-brushing it with a drill "bit" and "painting" the groove with Rust Converter and priming/painting. Then I added more spot putty to further smooth things out. Eventually it got more paint and I stopped fretting about small imperfections that would be covered by the trunk gasket. I investigate GM 338 a bit yesterday and found that it had additional names, e.g. White 40 and WA 8554. Might be worth a try. The Ford Wimbledon white is too yellow. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9904 Location: Lower Mainland BC | If the cap colours are any indication, GM 338 should be less yellow than the Ford Wimbledon White that I used on my roof (just by the rain gutters): (GM338WhitevsFordWimbledonWhite.jpg) Attachments ---------------- GM338WhitevsFordWimbledonWhite.jpg (166KB - 154 downloads)
