So my car has been parked for a couple weeks and my pops had fired it up and called me saying it had some oil burning off of the exhaust. So I looked around under the car and the oil pan seal looks fine, and the oil filter is seated properly. The oil seemed to be dripping from the back of the engine under the bellhousing when I started it up. Makes me think rear main seal. I've never replaced one on a 277, can I get to it while the motor is still in and do you guys think I'm going in the right direction?
Two things. First make sure it is engine oil and not trans fluid or even a mixture of both. That's what it usually is! Then, just drive it longer and more often. It may "take up". All 50s Mopar owners go through this from time to time!! Later, put a clean drip tray under the car and check it out further if required. With any kind of luck, that might not be necessary. Might have to go through the same thing next spring!!
Hey! Think positive!! Keep driving!
