Expert Posts: 1223 Location: Ramona, CA | When I bought my 1960 Chrysler New Yorker Town & Country wagon I found that the dash mounted mirror had been sawn off and a mirror installed above hanging from the upper windshield trim. The mirror head looks like a Chrysler part but the bracket does not have a part number on it. The mirror fits over the chrome trim inside the windshield and uses a single screw to hold it. This screw is the existing screw from the trim so no new holes were drilled. I posted this on Facebook and found that this kind of mirror was also used on earlier cars with dash mirrors. People postulate that it was an accessory you could get if you did not like the dash mounted mirror. I also looked at another '60 wagon that had the same mirror and found a vintage picture of another. Here are pictures of the 1960 version. I would like to find any information on these, especially any accessory book listings or other documentation. Extreme Veteran Posts: 427 Location: Ohio | Not certain of all the details / requirements on ordering a rear-view mirror in the more "standard" top location instead of the dash mounted rear-view mirror, but it was definitely an option. As pointed out the most common application where the dash mounted mirror was deleted is in police vehicles. When the dash mounted rear-view mirror was deleted, the factory used a simple plug to fill the mounting hole / location on top of the dash. Here is a dash from a 1961 Dodge with the "factory delete" dash mounted mirror. Pictures show the plug in place on the dash and top / back of plug removed. Expert Posts: 1223 Location: Ramona, CA | I ordered a 1966 version of the JC Whitney catalog to see if mine is in there. The one posted above looks like it's an earlier version as the newest vehicle listed is 1960. The mirror in my car has been there since at least 1973 when the second owner got the car. I asked him about it and he didn't know it was supposed to be on the dash.

Bought the complete dash and box of miscellaneous parts from the car. Not certain if a mirror was included. Though do have several rear-view mirrors from 1960-61 models, would have to check if any are not dash mounted style.

Expert Posts: 2196 Location: Muskego, WI | My 1960 wagon also has a rear view mirror mounted top center of the windshield, but the dash mount and stalk are still there (just not the original mirror). I next time I'm by the car, I'll take a picture of the mirror to see if it is the same as the one in your 1960 Chrysler wagon. My car has been sitting since 1977, so mirror would have been added a long time ago.

Mine looks different from the new one posted above which looks like James Rawa's one as they both appear to have to mounting holes for the mirror head. Digging through the parts that were purchased from the 1961 Dodge with the dash mount "mirror delete" plug referenced in my other post, believe that I located the rearview mirror that was originally in the car. The mounting bracket that mounts the mirror to the interior clearly has mopar stamping PCD and part number 2082221 on it. However, searching ALL the master parts catalogs from 1960-74 this part number was NOT listed in any of them. Most of the mirrors are listed as "mirror package", and in the 1961 Dodge master parts catalog there was one listed specifically as "Police mirror pkg". It was also interesting that a lot of the mirror components had part numbers beginning with the same "2082" part prefix that's on the base. The mirror body looks to be a standard mopar style rearview mirror and the mounting bracket doesn't have any provision to attach the sunvisors, which is present on the later mopar mirror brackets for the style that moved the mount for the mirror from the dash to roof. Also at first, wasn't certain if the black paint on the mirror was original or not. And though not 100% certain, after examining it closely, the way the paint is applied especially on the front where the actual mirror is mounted it looks original as it's done way too nice inside the recessed area to be spray bombed later. Interesting. There would have to be some provision under the headliner to mount that mirror and strange that it wouldn't hold the visors. I wonder if the police visors are cut out to clear the mirror? On my '60 wagon since the visors aren't cut out, they hit the mirror so you can't turn them all the way to the windshield.

Weird that they would do that since they could have used the same mirror and visor design as the Imperials, which didn't use the dash-mounted mirror that year. Being 6.6 tall I find driving a 61 ply a chore to changel lanes. Have to slouch just to see out large back window. Cool option there. I'm 6'5" tall so I know what you're saying. My 300F is the only car I have with the dash mirror and all the mirrors are a pain. The side mirrors are full of tailfins and I have a hard time getting used to the rear view. But the view out the windshield is much better than even my new cars. Now on my 1960 wagon, they put that overhead mirror on and sawed off the dash mirror. At first I didn't even notice the mirror above. I haven't driven the car so I didn't pay attention to the difference. When I started this investigation I took it off for the pictures and then someone asked me if I thought it was better to have it up top. So I put it back in and sat in the car and the top half of the view is blocked by the rear a/c unit hanging down from the ceiling. Might be ok for someone shorter. I should stick it in the F and see what it's like.

This is a thing that one get's used to if one drives the cars. I changed the right rearview mirror glass to a concave one that was a gift from a dear friend. So, now I have a very good rear view from the fender mounted mirrors and the Mirrormatic.

Concave is the opposite of what the later models from the factory went to when they changed from the flat glass and went to convex mirrors with the "warning" objects in the mirror are closer than they appear. If you really did go concave, what are the images like in the mirror compared to the standard factory version?

That info is to the best of my knowledge. And in addition to the mirror dash plug, the dash had other items that would back that up, for example: hole and mount drilled for spotlight, radio delete plate that was cut for some other style non factory radio. The one you have obviously screws into some sort of bracket under the headliner behind the windshield frame. If that's also true in 1960, then the next question is does that mount only exist on police vehicles or is it actually just built in to all the cars. Sorry for the confusion.
