Thank goodness the fender skirts are removable. My '59 DeSoto came to me with fender skirts (and curb feelers) that lasted about 5 minutes on the car after it arrived five years ago. They are wrapped in bubble wrap since they were removed and are stored someplace in the garage. But, obviously some folks like 'em or there never would have been any.

I’ve never understood the attraction of fender skirts. They are visual weight to the car,it loses the sleekness. In my opinion they destroy the looks of virtually any car they are on,unless they were specifically designed to have skirts from the factory. I don’t like continental kits either Yet for some reason fender skirts and continental kits seem to keep finding their way into these cars.

Exner’s designs were very artistic and deliberate; I think he specifically detailed the look of each model down the width of the whitewalls. The aftermarket accessory cladding items only ruin the lines of the car(s).

The aftermarket accessory cladding items only ruin the lines of the car(s). Virgil Exner was a genius. The contour of wheel openings are integral to the overall design as they lend a forward sweep of motion to the car when viewed from the side. They are windswept and sleek. All fender skirts succeed in doing is negating that effect completely. They add visual weight to the rear end of the car making it look ponderous and bloated. For some reason restorers/resellers seem to think they are mandatory before putting their cars up for sale. I’ve seen them on numerous 57-58 fury’s,as well as other forward look makes. Each time I shake my head and think, why? All I can think is the same thing Viper Guy said. Those skirts would be off the car before I turned the key to drive it home. -----

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9699 Location: So. Cal | The only car I have seen where they improved it's appearance was on a '55-'57 Thunderbird. And that was only because Ford designed such large, ugly wheel openings on them.

Expert Posts: 4044 Location: Connecticut | That's a sweet car. Low optioned, but it is a 2drHT with Torqueflite. Whoever bought it got a great deal. And as a bonus, an original trunk mat. Ron
