Member Posts: 19 | Can anyone take a picture of how their 318 is mounted to the crossmember in their 59 Plymouth for me? Mine was originally a flathead six but the previous owner modified it (badly) for a 440, and I’m considering getting rid of the modifications and putting a poly 318 in it. Just trying to get an idea of what I would need to do, and I have no frame of reference. Thanks! | ||

Veteran Posts: 143 Location: Denver, Colorado, USA | @gas_giant, I cannot help with a photo of a 1959 Plymouth, but I can say that the A318 (and LA 273, 318, 340, 360) is about 21.5" long from front of block to rear of block. The B/RB is about 24.5". Those dimensions might give you an idea of how you'll need to modify the current transmission crossmember to accommodate an A or LA engine and transmission. Note that 1957 - 1961 A318 engines and transmissions differ significantly from 1962 - 1967 A318 and 1964 onward LA engines and transmissions. For parts availability, pricing, and transmission options, you’re better off going with a 1962 onward configuration.

I just had the length info at my finger tips. | ||

I just had the length info at my finger tips. I appreciate a pedant when it comes to crucial numbers like an engine's length, so no worries and thanks for the insight. I personally measured an A318, LA318, B383, and RB440 I owned/own from the most forward front of the block to the rear where the bellhousing mates to find those measurements. Weertman's 21.4 to my 21.5 is a good confirmation, but the extra 1" in my measurement for a B/RB is suspicious. I coincidentally today received a clean 1962 Chrysler Marine Division paperback factory service manual I purchased that I plan on scanning into PDF and posting on my website since the marine engines are such a rare oddball in the A-block family. It has wonderful elevation blueprints of the A318, B383, and RB413 but is missing a crucial chunk of the block length and simply measures from front of block to the rear gearbox output flange. It has every other measurement including the center of gravity but neglects to provide a dimension of center of gravity to front of block . . . go figure. My 24.5" could very well be a typo when I was either at the engines jotting down measurements or at my computer publishing those measurement on the website. Alternatively, Weertman may either be measuring from a different location than me, or may have a typo. I'm due to visit my cousin this weekend and will try to get an accurate reading since we installed the B413 I rebuilt into his 1966 Coronet two-door hardtop. I measured that engine prior to installation, but I should be able to drop a plumb bob to the bellhousing flange and a level at the front of the block to pull the measurement. I'll report back when I have that measurement. | ||

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9911 Location: Lower Mainland BC | . Justin: I just checked Weertman's book to see if there was a diagram showing where the length of the V8 blocks was measured. There are some poor quality "blueprint" (type) diagrams (in B & W) but there is no indication regarding the measuring locations. *IF* I had to guess (or set a protocol), I would measure from major machined surface at the rear of the block to the front most machined surface of the block at the front, to which the timing cover and/or water pump manifold was attached. *IF* Regardless, that probably isn't as important as the distance from the motor mounts the where the back of the engine would hit the firewall if the engine was pushed back to point of contact.
