I had some issues last weekend with the 61 Pioneer with a 313...very new to me. Broke down on the hwy way. Get the car towed home.
Lifters were very noisy #6 and #8 and a bottom end knock. Installed new plugs and lifter noise gone. But the bottom end still pretty bad.
Question is, can 318 bottom end parts be used in a 313, and will a early 70 318s bolt up the the trans? Thanks AL

The early, pre-62, blocks and cranks are decidedly different than the 62-up A and LA pieces. The alignment dowels at the rear face of the block were relocated and a couple of bolts moved. The crank and crank flange simply do not interchange w/o some major headaches. Swapping a 62-up engine to replace the 313 does not work due to the different converter design in addition to the dowels and bolts.
Bottom line is that you need to source parts for the pre-62 A engine.

Any early Plymouth, Dodge, DeSoto, or Chrysler V8 hemi or poly will bolt up to it from '54-'61, as well as the '52-'53 Dodge & DeSoto V8 engines.

both the hemi based Poly & the A Poly through '61 will also bolt up. Only the long tail 51-3 (and some '54) Chr won't work.

Thanks I know a guy who has a running 313 that I will buy, are the intake and exhaust gaskets the same as the 318 poly. I noticed on ad for the intake said for the 2 bolt valve covers and mine has 3. Thanks AL

Yes, intake and exhaust gaskets are the same. There are some differences in the water pumps through the years, as well as the 2 bolt vs. 3 bolt valve covers.

@ram250098, It's difficult to diagnose engine noises over the internet since what you describe as a knock could be a number of things from detonation, bearings, insufficient oil pressure, piston slap, etc. Changing sparkplugs won't inpact lifter noise. The A313 is an under-bored A318 used in export vehicles, so the only differences from in the 1957 - 1961 313 and 318 are the pistons and camshafts. 1957 - 1961 A313 or A318 crankshafts have the same 3.31" stroke and will physically bolt into either block, but note that using 313 pistons with a 318 crank or 318 pistons with a 313 crank requires balancing the rotating assembly since the piston weight differs by more than 2 grams.

If your desire is to install an aluminum TorqueFlite 727 (or 904) and dig into the engine to overhaul or rebuild it, my recommendation is to find a 1962 - 1967 A313 or A318 and swap it in since 1962 onward 727/904 transmissions and torque converters bolt up. If you cannot locate new overbore 313 pistons, your machinist can bore the block to the 318's 3.91" bore where you can use standard A318 pistons. You'd need to have a new driveshaft built and address the transmission crossmember. Otherwise, if you wish to stick with the pre-1962 engine, you're limited to the iron PowerFlite and TorqueFlite transmissions, or you can purchase an adapter to mate a 1962 onward aluminum TorqueFlite to the early block, but they are expensive. I have a bunch of info on the poly A-block engine, parts interchange, and transmission options on my website that might help.
