One of if not THE first things I bought for my 56 Dodge D500 (with the single 4bbl Carter WCFB) was a chrome aftermarket air cleaner (paid US$20 for the air cleaner WITH the paper element). (My car had come with a 57 style "side saddle" air cleaner - which I hated).

In order to run the chrome air cleaner, I had to create a "Franken" adapter using Mr. Gasket 2082 air cleaner adapter (5 1/8" to 4 7/32") and a Mr. Gasket 9341 1" high spacer (for 5 1/8" air cleaners) glued together. Wasn't pretty but it worked (for a while) and allowed me to create a "315 Hemi Head" sticker (modelled on the OE "426 Hemi Head" sticker, as shown below:

From a few years ago (lots of changes/improvements in the engine bay since then):

At some point in time, I must have over tightened the wing nut on the top of the air cleaner and overstressed the thin edge of the 2082 portion of the "Franken Adapter". The edge cracked. I tried glue and metal foil tape but it was just not going to work well again.

In the meantime, I did oil bath to paper conversions of a real OE D500 air cleaner and a "Ram Air" adaption of a Golden Lion 413 air cleaner. So the chrome air cleaner stayed on the shelf.

Recently, I decided that I wanted to run the chrome air cleaner again.

About the same time, I found a machined telfon adapter on eBay:

The text of the auction said:

"Very quality heavy Teflon material machined out of stock to fit the top of an Edelbrock or aftermarket Carter AFB series 4 barrel (5-1/8" inlet) carburetor and then allow the original factory 4 barrel (4-7/32") air cleaner to fit. There's a bunch of the cheap adapters that go the other way to put an aftermarket air cleaner on the stock old carburetors but couldn't find any to do this way. Notice the smooth radius edges to not restrict any flow. Made to sit on the Edelbrock and Carter AFB carburetors but will not fit a Holley because of all the choke housing in the way. It does increase the air cleaner height 1" so you guys with low hood clearance, this can be an issues."

Sounded good. Maybe too good. So I bought one. Just picked it up today.

Now that I have it, I have realized that it is a male/female thing. The 5 1/8" end does fit nicely into the chrome after market air cleaner but the 4 7/32" end is mean to fit *INTO* a 4 7/32" throat air cleaner, NOT OVER the air horn of a 4 7/32" nominal carb top. As Maxwell Smart used to say "Missed by that much" (holding two fingers close together).

Ironically, the only way to make the eBay Teflon adapter work would be to cut off the 4 7/32" lip and Franken-add a 2082 adapter.

Where is that guy with a CNC lathe and chunk of aluminum when you need him??

This is the situation:

I made my own adapter for my '57 Windsor. I modeled it up and had it 3D printed. Pretty easy that way. This was to put a small air cleaner on a big carb. But if you want to go backward, you could model it up and 3D print it just like I did. Just keep in mind that 3D printing tends to shrink dimensions by around 2%, depending on which printer & material you are using. So it would be best to get that information from the printer before you finish the model.

Nathan: What you did (which is great) is exactly what the machined eBay Teflon adapter is supposed to do (now that I figured it out).

In the interest of moving this issue along, to remake what I made before, I have purchased a Mr. Gasket 2082 size adapter and ordered a 9341 spacer (not in stock at the moment - maybe tomorrow).

In the interim, I went into my big box of air cleaner stuff and pulled out a spacer that I made to run the "Ram Air" Golden Lion air cleaner. It was actually a section of 4" nominal PVC pipe coupler (I must have thrown the other bit out - like a fool). Anyway. I tried it over the Carter WCFB. Fits like a dream (better fit than the Mr. Gasket 2082 at the top of the WCFB).

As it happens, the machined Telfon eBay adapter fits into the PVC coupler quite nicely (a tiny bit of sanding on the inside of the coupler will improve the fit some more).

So I have options:

Now to buy another PVC coupler (so I can adjust the height of the assembly so the bottom of the air cleaner clears the choke housing on the carb).

The decal in the various Hemi sizes would probably find a market....

That might be possible, but not easy (it took 12 steps to convert the two 426s to 315s - because of the angle of the numbers)

That said, it might not be as hard now that I have the angles worked out.

What numbers would be popular (not 241)?

270?
325?
330?
331?
354?
392?

Here is the start of a 426 to 392 sticker (I really need to start over with a better quality base image)

I was wrong. It still needs the 12 steps.

Projects like this are all about getting the right font in there if you are trying to mimic the 426 look. I'm not sure why you would want to do that though. Orbitron front is sort-of close, but not perfect, and not fat enough. If you wanted this, you would ultimately have to create your own font. You could copy the "2" directly over from the 426, and turn the "6" upside down to get the "9". You could then modify the orbitron font on the "3" to make it match, or start from scratch on it.

Depending on price I like one for the 331!

Thank you for information about the Teflon adapter on eBay- bought one so now I can finally use my Golden Commando air cleaner on my 59 Sport Fury with the Edelbrock carb!

*Somebody* (unknown to me) has already done this for a 331 installed in a 57 Dodge Coronet. Looks way better than my less than perfect attempt.

yes, I've seen that before, but don't recall getting a response to similar comment....
