I have a '55 New Yorker...

What oil viscosity do you use? What filter? How many quarts?

I'm seeing a lot of mixed information which is why I'm here.

The modern oils are characterized by 2 numbers (multi-grade oils). For example, a 15W-40 oil means that the viscosity index is 15 in cold conditions, and 40 in hot conditions. The higher the index, the more viscous the oil is. In the '50s, the oil technology was not so advanced, and so there was also single grade oils.

As you can see in this extract of the '55 Chrysler Service Manual below, the choice of oil is mainly linked to temperature. I'm quite sure you don't use your car below 32°F, and therefore you can safely choose between a mineral 20W40 or 10W30, since single grade oils are no longer available (unless you go for a specific oil for classic cars).

But the most important thing for our classic car is the Zinc content of the oil. Until the advent of catalytic converters, the Zinc content of oil was much higher, and our engines were designed with that in mind. Since it's not the case anymore, we need to have an Zinc oil additive (ZDDP). Either that, or you go for a specific oil for classic cars, which already includes that additive.

In conclusion, I would suggest:
- a 15W40 mineral oil in which you add a ZDDP additive
- a specific oil for classic cars which already includes the ZDDP additive

Also, in general, the more worn your engine is, the more viscosity you can use. If you are working with a newly rebuilt engine, then 5W-30 would be good. But if your engine is old and tired, then a higher weight would work better to fill the larger gaps between your bearings.

I have generally been using Lucas Hot Rod and Classic because it has a high Zinc content, e.g. 2100 ppm. I use 20W50 because the engine is older with an unknown history. It doesn't burn oil (that I can see) except on the odd cold start (like today ). But it soon clears up and I am happy (enough )

Most recently, the Lucas oil was a bit hard to find so for this last oil change, I switched to Motul. It was on sale and cheaper than the Lucas (which was out of stock anyway) and supposedly was high zinc (but I do NOT know what the ppm is)

I recommend that you convert it to use a modern filter by getting an adapter from Hot Heads. If you would rather not do that for some reason, you can get the original filter from Napa.

The capacities are shown below in a page from the 55 Chrysler Factory Service Manual.

I believe that the cartridge oil filter is PN 1610 435 like this one:

What do you think of Shell Rotella Diesel, SAE 30, CF, SL ?
I add ZDDP also.

SL/CF should work w/o additives. Diesel oil has changed also, trying to remember the grade before the change, thinking it was CI, with CJ being the new lower zddp stuff. Have seen SM/CJ.
