One of my spark plug tubes is filled with oil.

I have an after market aluminum valve cover.

I haven't had the chance to remove the spark plug for inspection but I understand it's 13/16, so I'll order one of those.

What is the likely culprit and how can I fix it?

Thanks

Most likeky, your valve cover gasket is leaking.
I strongly suggest to use a cork one.

I assume this is for a Hemi engine and not a slant 6. The most likely cause for this is not removing the washer on the end of the spark plug. If you do that, it won't seal well, and it will destroy your tube.

Yes, 331 hemi. The valve cover is chrome (not aluminum).

I'm going to pull the plug and check when I buy the socket today.

What's strange is, one tube seems to be affected rather than all. I'll remove the washers and see if I can get it to seal.

If I need a tube, is there a source for one or do I need to buy 8?

Thanks

Depending on how literal "filled with oil" is, you may need to spin the engine w/o the plug to make sure you don't hydrolic the cyl.

Ebay is probably the only place you can purchase just one. Here is an example. I might have an extra, but I would rather not sort through them to find out.

Thanks, I purchased it with hopes I don't need it and as a backup.

The tube was half filled with oil. I was able to soak up most of it with some shop towels.

That's really strange.

The spark plug tube is sealed to the valve cover with a rubber seal to prevent that situation that you describe. I strongly suggest that either because your valve cover is modified or the rubber seal has deteriorated or split, you need to focus on this seal. That said, the seal might be fine but that spark plug tube has a split in it, allowing oil to migrate into the tube.

The valve cover gasket has nothing to do with this problem.

The rubber sealing rings are available from FelPro or FelPro dealers, such as this:

I actually had the same problem on my 270 Hemi 2 days ago. The bottom mating surface of one tube had a little high spot on it causing a compression/oil leak. Cleaned it up and flattened it out flush and problem solved. The other tube had a cracked spark plug that was actually blowing fumes out of the end of the tube and plug wire boot. I would pull the tube and carefully inspect it after cleaning.

the spark plug tube should be crushed down with the spark plug but the sides do fill for the bottom seal...

the top uses those rubber seals

They dont make those felpro seals anymore but just search for hemi spark plug tubes on ebay, lots there

I removed the tube and spark plug, everything looked good, so I removed the washers from the plug and reinstalled with a new rubber seal and so far no issues after driving the car for 10 mins. Fingers crossed.
