hi all, i plan on converting my 56 dodge crl to power steering, i have the correct gear box, just aquired a generator/eaton power steering pump from ebay. upon inspection of the parts it appears that it is a 1954 combo (listed as 55-56 on ebay) no tag on generator, the only is mark i can find is the pulley "pu 46" which part indicates 1954. i know i cant use the generator, are the pumps the same from 54 to 56? can i use this pump on my 56? thanks

Tony: I don't know if it would make a lot of difference but most (all?) 56 Dodges that I have seen with Power Steering used the Vickers pump (attached to the back of the 12V generator, driven by two "fan" belts).

I think 55 Dodges used the Eaton pump. Not sure why they switched or when.

Make sure the generator is 12 volt as in 54 they were 6 volt.

That and make sure that the drive end of the generator will mate up with the power steering pump (Eaton or Vickers)

thanks dave and rolland for your input. dave your probably correct on the 56 dodges using the vickers pump. ive been looking at a lot of pictures of 56 dodge engines with power steering and havent seen one with an eaton. as for the generator, i may pull the 54 6 volt and my 56 12 volt apart to see if i can swap out the armature and drive plate. now to find a correct vickers pump.

For non-Generator/PS pump reasons, I had the Vickers PS pump off my 56 Dodge generator. As I was putting things back together, I remembered that I had previously purchased a 1402 147 rubber insolator/coupling bushing (shown above).
So I obviously decided to replace the existing insulator bushing with the new one.

As I pried the old bushing (it was bad) out of the back of the generator, I was surprised to see a metal reinforcement (a "sleeve"?) of some kind in the middle of the old bushing. I have not seen that part in any of the PS
diagrams but just now I was able to find a PN as "19-54-10 SLEEVE, Coupling 1404 026" (on an internet search). I found one (and only one) on ebay. I just removed and reused mine in the new 1402147 bushing

The 1402147 is out there:

Bushing (but no sleeve)
