Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | Can anyone confirm the height of the stem for MirrorMatic on a '60 Chrysler?
I still have the standard rearview stem and that's too high.
Thankful for any input

Location: Sept. 1958 | I had a standard mirror stem on my 61 Chrysler with Mirrormatic. I thought the stems were all the same. |

Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | No, the MirrorMatic stem should be shorter as the MirrorMatic is larger than the standard mirror. Try to tilt your stem backwards as much as possible - that will give you better view of the hood and right fender. Surely there must be one owner here with factory MirrorMatic that can measure the stem? |

Location: Sept. 1958 | Looking in the 61 parts manual, they don’t show a different stem. I haven’t driven my 61 in almost two years, unfortunately it was rear ended driving to the Hershey car show in 2021. |

Location: So. Cal | I didn't remember this morning so I took a flashlight out for you and measured it. Mine is still mounted in the car. The top end has a little angle to it. But from the top of the swivel ball, to the very top of the arm, I measure 3 11/16". More like 3 5/8" if you measure from the top of the swivel ball to the beginning of the angled end. |

Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | Thanks' Nathan, really appreciate it! Puzzled though, seem that your stem is a standard stem. I get the measurement to 3-19/32" (3.5950).

Location: Ramona, CA | If there is a difference, it matters if the car was factory equipped with the Mirror-Matic. I have a bulletin from Chrysler stating that the cars that came with the Mirror-Matic had it installed but the hole in the dash for the wiring needed to be drilled at the dealership once the car was sold. This was done so that if a customer wanted a car off the lot that didn't have the Mirror-Matic, they could take it from another car and move it over. No mention of moving the mirror base from one car to another.
They also installed the radio antennas and right-hand mirrors at the dealership for the same reason. |

Location: So. Cal | I measured from the top of the ball, not the bottom of the stem. So check that, and it should be close to 3 11/16". |

Thanks' Nick, that explanation is very plausible.
I'm thinking about to make an offset stud for to check the best lenght |

Still no one with an factory (or dealer) mounted MirrorMatic?

Location: So. Cal | What are you talking about? Many people have factory installed mirrormatics, including myself. All they are saying is that the mirrormatic stem is not the same as the regular mirror stem. |

Meanwhile, the adjustable offset mount is done for practical trials. |

Location: So. Cal | Why do you think the difference is in the length? They wouldn't make a new part just to change the length slightly. It would have to be a significant difference to make sense to do it. Otherwise, they wouldn't bother. No, that's not the reason. If you look at the diagram, you willl see the grommet. It looks like this particular stem has the wire going through it. But that's not how the wire routes on my '60 Chrysler. The wire just goes down from the mirror head to the dash. And the stem itself is solid - no hole to route a wire or to place a grommet.
So I conclude that this early '59 stem was different from the '60-up production stems in how they routed the wire from the mirror. If you cared about that difference, you should be asking for pictures of original '59 mirrormatics only. |
