Subject: Head Gasket Match Up for 1955 Plymouth 259 V8 Poly Head

Location: Beaumont TX		I'm doing a valve job on my car and just got the heads back from the machine shop. I got head gaskets from Hot Heads and they are really high quality gaskets but the don't have two holes.

Do you think it is OK to install these gaskets without the two holes? The holes go to the water jacket and there are some other holes very close by that also go to the water jacket.

Location: Newark, Texas (Fort Worth)		Is it a Felpro gasket from Hot Heads? Some are blanked to control flow, It might be correct using today's information. Location: Beaumont TX		Thanks Marc, I have a set of gasket punches so I have been thinking about punching a hole.

The gaskets are Best gaskets and are very high quality. I think these holes in the engine are casting holes and not official water flow holes but I am not sure and don't want to put the head gaskets in if not exactly correct.

I'll call the Jalopy Journal folks too, like you suggested.

Location: Beaumont TX		I found the answer to my question in the Parts Catalog. I didn't think of looking here and didn't think the pictures would be as complete and accurate as they are.

In the 55-58 Mopar Parts Catalog on Page 9-6, the two head gaskets are shown, parts 21 & 45, and it clearly shows that the missing holes I had questions about are not in the original Mopar gasket. It also shows the holes the gasket covers in the block and in the head. So, these holes are intended to be covered. I'm pretty sure these are just casting holes and are not meant for water flow. Regardless, I'm confident now that the gasket is correct and these two holes are supposed to be covered.

The drawings in the parts catalog are remarkably detailed and accurate. And with your computer you can zoom on parts and see more details.

I should have thought about looking here sooner. Good lesson learned.
