"But I found out (the fins) also help stabilize the car on the road. They proved it in wind tunnel tests."

Not every black-and-white film needs to be colorized. Especially if it's bad colorization like this one.

Most people do not seem to understand the stabilizer statement. It's not about speed, it is just about steering correction in heavy crosswinds. That makes indeed more sense, even though the effect is very likely minuscule.

At one time, I mentioned that Chrysler may have changed the top of the '57 windshield to the '58 style due to wind tunnel testing. My statement was met with ridicule because people said that they didn't do wind tunnel testing in the '50's, and only started doing that with the Daytona & Superbird in the '60's. But the statement in this video refutes that, so I concur that it's possible that the windshield change did result from wind tunnel testing.

They did, when they designed the 60 Plymouth in 57/58. IIRC, It is mentioned in the 60 Sales brochure.

All the major manufacturers were wind tunnel testing in the late 40s even... I think in 58 they tried because in 57 their nascar cars were HORRIBLE for wind resistance... Exners designs were not race friendly... esp the 300C but didnt matter since the hemi was banned.

I know they banned the 426 hemi in 1965 due to not being used in production, but I've never heard that they banned the early hemi. What was the reason given for it and what's your source?

because they won every race in 55-56...

He rules fixed the early hemi.. from wiki... it actually hit the Old J2 engine also.

1957
Kiekhaefer quit NASCAR in January 1957 after battling Bill France, over accusations of cheating by the other competitors (though no rules infractions were found under NASCAR's close scrutiny), NASCAR changed the rules to Kiekhaefer's disadvantage, and he did not want a backlash to affect Mercury sales after fans booed the team.
