RE: IML: Exhaust

The '69 Polara exhaust was very similar to the B-body HP exhaust. It is the
traditional H pipe design. I haven't seen the '68 Imperial dual exhaust,
but it is probably similar.

The X design is similar to the H, but the shape of the X allows for better
scavenging with the exhaust pulses bouncing off each other from the opposing
bank. Depending upon the installation, the X design may make transmission
maintenance a little more difficult.

Yes, the Corvair introduced the Turbo muffler on the Turbo Monza. The later
Mopar Hemi muffler is a larger version based on a Turbo muffler design. The
Hemi mufflers have internal baffles that help direct the exhaust flow. I
agree the Hemi mufflers sound great. Deep, mellow, not raspy at all. A
buddy had a '68 Hemi Road Runner with full factory exhaust (pipes, mufflers
and resonators, all NOS). With the resonators on the car, it sounded like a
/6!

The Dynomax Super Turbo is very similar to the Hemi muffler design. They
used to have a heavy duty version listed as the Hemi Super Turbo. I think
it was essentially the same muffler, with a heavier gauge shell. It was
only available in the larger (23" or so length) sizes, not the smaller
traditional Turbo (18" or so length) muffler size.

Bill asked about the Hush Thrushes. Walker now owns Thrush. Dynomax is
also a division of Walker. Thrush is limited to the lower end of the
product line. Mr. Horsepower is still on the packaging. They have a Turbo
style still available, and a glass pack. The glass pack isn't the same as
the old Thrush canister style. It a Cherry Bomb style.

My plan for the '67 LeBaron is to run the factory C-body HP manifolds to a
pair of 2 1/2" pipes, with an H-pipe, to a pair of the larger Dynomax Super
Turbo (or possibly Ultra Flows), then over the axle and back to a pair of
turn downs by the rear bumper tucked up so you can't see them without
sticking your head under the car. I may run resonators before the
turndowns, I don't know yet. I need to get the brakes done, and Spring to
arrive before anything else.
