Re: IML: What to use for cleaning

this may sound dumb but the only thing that works for me is lots and lots of elbow grease. and a cheep $2. scraper. after the crud is scraped off, most any cleaner will finish it up. but there was a time when I tryed to remove a substance off an old new yorker, I still don't know what it was it was a little like the crud one would see under a set of valve covers , but was thick and sticky, i fist thought it was undercoating but It wasn't like any i have seen before . I touched the stuff with my hands as I don't know how to work on a car without getting filthy. but it had a black residew that I swear went right through my skin. because GOJO hand cleaner wouldn't get my hands clean. so I had to let it wear off. and when I took a bath in the tub that night the black stuff had stained the tub. let me say I sleeped on the sofa that night. after my wife saw the mess i had made.

Yesterday I got everything pulled off and labeled and got the center
link ready to ship out for rebuilding.

All these parts are covered in massive amounts of 45 year old gunk that
I swear could safely be used to hold a jumbo jet together instead of
rivets. I used an entire can of comet just trying to get it all off me
after the day was done.

So what do yall use to clean this kind of stuff? I normally use simple
green or gunk and this stuff just laughs at both of those products. I
want it all to be pretty and clean before I try to put it back together
again.
