On my '60 and newer models the "bumper hook portion" has two different positions to connect the notch in the lever portion of the jack. The hook is labeled "front" on one of the positons and "rear" on the other. This depends on whether you are jacking up the front or rear of the car. If you don't place the hook in the correct position on the jack, it will not support the weight of the car properly. If your car is suppose to have a jack like this, then you shouldn't use the one you have unless you can verify that it will support the car properly. Never use a bumper jack as the sole means to support a car. Always carry a jack stand to use as a suppliment. On my '55 and '56 models, the "bumper hook" is incorporated into the lever portion of the jack, since both the front and rear bumpers are set up to accept the jack in the single position. I hope this helps.
