IML: Collectible Automobile Magazine

I just picked up the current issue of the Collectible Automobile Magazine. 
The article itself wore me out. Basically the jest of the article is the 
1960 to 1963 Imperials were well engineered etc, but they came out to late. 
That the 61 Imperial would look good if it came out in 1959 the same year 
as the 1959 Cadillac.

Well I have a 1961 Black Lebaron and a 1960 2 door Imperial. I also have a 
1956 and a 1967. But for the sake of the story, 1959 or 1961? The article 
covers how they were perceived back then as tastes were changing. The 
question is how are they perceived now? If you drive one of these cars or 
take them to shows you see the reactions of the people. Most people have 
never seen these cars when they were new years ago. The younger generation 
goes ga ga over the Imperials.

That is why I have so many of these cars.  I am not going to say I love 
them regardless of their value with so many, I have to consider their 
worth. My thoughts on the collector car hobby is this, people will buy the 
cars that remind them of their childhood, which is great. The one thing to 
remember is, as people age, cars that years ago brought a certain amount of 
money suddenly are harder to sell. I had a situation where I purchased a 
Texaco and a Mobil gas pump in Chicago. The individual had a large 1939 
visible gas pump around 13 feet high, it was yellow and  nice. He told me 
he could not sell it. My opinion was that the people that remember that 
type of gas pump have either passed away or are at the age they don't care 
anymore, per se.

This brings me back to the Imperials. These cars create a stir among young 
people when they are seen and these cars were made well before they were 
even born. I am talking about the young people that do not care about the 
60's muscle cars, they like little zippy cars but are taken back by the 
design of the Imperials.

I have three sons I hope they will take an interest in these cars, I have 
one son that has that interest. But if hard times comes or I pass the cars 
onto them someday. I do not think they will be like the visible gas pump 
owner I spoke about above. I belive there will be an interest in these cars 
long after I am gone because they are rolling production art that we will 
never see again.
