RE: IML: 69 starter motor

If you bring your old starter to the parts store and lay it next to a '90's Dakota starter you aren't likely to think you've got the right part. The mini-starter looks almost nothing like the old behemouth. See here:

On the bright side it is MUCH easier to wiggle into position and install. The same starter apparently works on everything from slant sixes to the hemi. I have only put mini-starters on small blocks, but one caveat: There are some people that claim that some grinding of the starter body may be necessary on a big block. It also may be necessary to take the plastic wiring connection off and bolt the wires directly to the studs. See here:

Scroll to the very bottom for advice on big block installs.

I put a Mancini Racing ministarter in my '82 and it just now (Saturday) gave up the ghost after one year of constantly cranking it when the car wouldn't start. (Ooops, my bad) I have to decide if I want to rebuild it or replace it and save it for the next time.

I keep going through cars, and keep throwing starter
motors at them. They all seem to age poorly. New
ones sound tight and fast - old ones loose and
metallically rattly.

If you crank and it seems slow and the engine is cold,
you can reach down and tap the body of the starter
motor with your finger. The last car I got was
cranking so slowly that it wasn't catching, but wanted
to. the starter motor was so hot I burned my finger,
so I gave up on it.

It was drawing so much current that it was heating
like crazy.

If you need to replace, ask the parts guy for the
correct starter motor (62-72 Chrysler/Imperial 440),
and then ask for a starter out of a 1994/96 Dodge
Dakota V8. Supposedly a better, smaller, lighter
motor and impressive in its difference. Also more
expensive, but I was tempted last time.

You might also think one step ahead and remove your
starter to take in to avoid the core charge and to
compare to ensure you're getting the right part.
