IML: '60 column problem found

Hi Folks,

I undid the bolts on the steering gearbox to find that there is only up and down adjustment, no fore and aft.  When the shop put the body back on the frame they slid it back a quarter inch.  I can tell from the washer marks on the floor.  A quarter inch, on the angle of the steering column, will translate to half inch gap at the top.  I am so put out with the shop already anyway.  Now I have to slide the body of the car back.  Guess it will give me a chance to replace all the flimsy body mount washers they used instead of the heavy originals.  Car restoration sure can be agravating.  For every part I put on I find two more things that have been done wrong.  AArrggh.  Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Sounds like you should be loosening the box and trying
to float it forward of its present location. Mark
what you do so that you can go back to it. If it's
obvious that the box is sitting back on its range of
adjustment, then you've just answered the question of
"why" your system isn't lining up properly.

Double check that the steering column is as far down
as you can go by loosening and lifting it first, and
then re-seating it and making certain that it's seated
all the way down.

Get everything loose and start fiddling would be my
next step.
