Re: IML: '68 brake interchangeability

Does anyone know or has tried using front spindles from a 1976 Gran Fury for the Budd Brake Imperials. I pulled a set from a junk yard and they look very similar to the Imperials. I have not followed up on this since my 1969 Budd brakes are working fine and my car seems to be getting <500 miles/year of very easy driving. However, I am sure the time will come to fix/improve them. I like the Budd design and would probably try the Toyota spindle conversion, but you are still locked into that one hub and if it is no longer useable, you arer out of luck.

A relate FYI:

I converted a 1966 Newport to front discs 2 years ago. The only spindles that I could get were from a 1972 Fury. The spindle and rotors are different from 1972 to 1973 and are much rarer and expensive ($150+ vs. $50+). However, it turns out that the rotor castings are the same. They are machined differently for race and seal placement. Thus you can have two different rotors with the same part# stamped on them. Where this is going is: is there a one piece rotor out there which would be compatible with the Budd brakes for Imperials if just the race location was machined differently? This is not a trivial task, but once a CNC program is setup, you may be able to produce these rotors for ca $150.
