IML: air conditioning in 1957 imp

hello america
ithink i might have a problem with the ac in our 57 imp that you guys may be 
able to help with so here goes
when i turn the ign key i can here the mag clutch click in , however when i 
push the starter and the engine running the mag clutch does not revolve with 
the pully,   to test the clutch [ without the engine running ] i put a feed 
from the battery to the clutch wire  and the clutch clicks in .

not being copnversant with a/c i was scratching  and wondering  the clucth 
should always be turning , and if so what could be preventing  mine from 
doing
