Check the brake light switch -- on your '74, it lives up above the brake pedal.  You'll see a connector there with the two wires to the switch.  Use a jumper wire to connect the two wires, and if the brake lights then come on, the problem is most likely the switch.  Note that the switch is also adjustable, so you may just need to lengthen the travel of the switch a bit.
 
Fortunately, new brake light switches are readily available, cheap, and really quite easy to replace.  :o)
