IML: Smoking Engine at Manifold

My 73 leaks out of the valve cover and onto the
manifold when it sits desipte 3 attempts to fix it
with new gaskets over the years. Drips down onto the
non-stock cross-over exhaust that runs behind and
under the oil pan, too.

Car smokes and smells awful until it warms up and the
oil is burned away.

To test for the presence of a leak, you can let the
car go stone cold and have a buddy start the car and
run your hand over the manifold to head mating area to
try to detect a leak, which should be accomanied by
noise of rushing exhaust gasses, but WATCH OUT. That
manifold will heat up fast and will scald the heck out
of your hand once warm.

You can also use a stethoscope with no end on it as
sold at the auto parts place for detecting such leaks.
I like that tool much better than the bare hand
method, but they both work.

Smoke is indicative of burning or combustion. Your
exhaust gassses should already be combusted and if
there's smoke in the engine compartment and not out
the exhaust pipe, you're probably burning something on
the outside of the engine, and not doing internal
combustion to generate said smoke. Chris H was right
on with that.
