JVX makes an adapter so that you can bolt a 518 trans to a big block.  The 
518 is basically a 727 with overdrive.  They are expensive.  You also have 
to deal with changing the driveshaft (easy) and the trans crossmember and 
usually the tunnel (usually not so easy).  Can't say if there is more room 
on an Imperial, most of the people I know of did swaps on muscle era cars 
and it was not what I'd call easy, involving welding, cutting and modifying 
the floor pan and crossmember. Check www.moparts.com, there are quite a few 
o/d discussions on there.  There are other options.  Keisler is supposed to 
be coming out with a bolt in trans.  Warning: This is probably a GM o/d and 
Keisler's idea of "bolt-in" often requires welding and plasma cutters.  
There are also bell adapters to fit the (gasp!) GM 700 R4 trans. They are 
physically smaller and better supported through the aftermarket, but it's a 
GM trans and also not a cheap option.
