Ed,

You are absolutely right!

After I read your e-mail, I went out to the
convertible and felt the underside of the clock area
through the open ashtray. Yes, there is small hole.

The light it gives is very faint, and is probably less
obvious in my car thanks to the ash tray not being
installed yet. With the benefit of total darkness, the
arrangement makes a soft glow against the chrome
beneath the ash tray door.
