Hi Jim -
I'm not ready to bet my Imperial on it,
but I believe the 383 and the 413 use the same casting for the engine block and
thus are a little difficult to tell apart. The difference is in the bore
and stroke. The 413 used in the Imperial and New Yorker has (stock) a
4.19" bore and 3.750" stroke. The 383 used in the Windsor and Saratoga has
a 4.031" bore with the 3.750" stroke. But the easiest way is by (according
to the FSM)"the engine number stamped on a boss on the top side of the engine
block just back of the water pump". A 383 will have the sequence
"PR-38-and the date built (ie. 8-4)"; a 413 will have the sequence "P -41-and
the date built (once again ie. 8-4)". Otherwise, for me, the two engines
are tough to tell apart.
Hope this helps.

60imp 383
Well, I had the original engine rebuilt, I thought that it was also a
413 but looking closer I was convinced that it is 383. The
original starter takes up so much space . And it makes this engine
deprived of the horsepower it should easily obtain, for the custom headers I'm
going to have made for it. The has an extreme make over and it needs the Hi
output smaller starter.

For 60imp 383
Also, starters for 1962 and up V8 engines will not fit
pre-1962 engines. Before 1962 Chrysler used Autolite direct-drive
starters. Starting in 1962, Chrysler-built reduction gear starters
were used. The problem lies in the ring gear - the number of
teeth on the gear was changed along with the starter.
1962-64
Dodge 880 and Chryslers with manual transmissions continued to
use direct-drive stafters as did Canadian-built 1962-66 slant six
models (Prestolite starter).

Hi Jim - Are you sure about the 383? As far as
I know, unless your Imperial has had a heart transplant, it should have a
413. Just curious - Jim L. in OR ----- Original Message -----
